I could only keep going because I knew the truth behind Mackenzie's death couldn't be as simple as we were led to believe until the very end. We are whisked back and forth between the funeral, and the past, some distant and then moving forward to more recent events until we come to the day she died. Inspired by the work of Haruki Murakami and films like Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind, Somewhere In Between is metaphysical coming-of-age story about defining love and finding yourself. I thought it was a rather unique plot as it begins with the main character “waking up” to see her own funeral. From pacing to tone, she captured the essence of the story and helped build on the scenes and suspense.Hosmer juggles the story between past and present, each event drawing closer to Mackenzie’s untimely demise and the ultimate answer: What actually happened? Thank you so much to Suzanne Glidewell for gifting me a copy of your book in exchange for my honest review! Thirty-nine-year-old Mackenzie Bartholomew is literally “somewhere in between” No longer dead, but no light insight.

For instance, what can we "settlers" learn from people of the First Nations on whose traditional land we now reside? It was really good and lovely and helpful…and then it got dramatic…and then it got repetitive…but the last little poem was cute. Her willingness to be vulnerable and grapple openly with issues of feminism, marriage, law, ethics, and mothering makes this book a thought-provoking, brave, witty and refreshing read. So, I have a soft spot for any story that uses ghosts/spirits in an interesting way, and Somewhere In Between scratches that itch. When they sell their city home and move to an isolated ranch, they "inherit" a First Nations ranch hand who is himself well acquainted with pain and loss, and who has a direct connection to the person both Ian and Julie blame for their daughter's death.

It helps to ground readers in place and introduces one of the forms of silence explored in Somewhere In-Between. Thanks so much to the author for the advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Between spats at the funeral and glimpses into MacKenzie's past portray anything but a family of happiness.
