About this deal

Robert Westall's gripping first novel for children set during World War Two and winner of the Carnegie Medal. I don't like the distinction that is made between books for different ages - a good book is a good book - and I would highly recommend this to younger and older people alike.

A surprise will come their way which will create an interesting dilemma for the secrecy and integrity of their hidden gun emplacement. Consider the impact of rationing on people’s lives during World War Two, and also the role of the Black Market. After they discover he knows some English, they begin to get pretty comfortable with each other, hanging out, keeping watch and reading comic books. We build and maintain all our own systems, but we don’t charge for access, sell user information, or run ads.Rudi is befriended by the gang of friends and they realize that those who they were taught to hate and fear are just like themselves frightened and disillusioned.

Rudi really doesn’t want to do this, but Chas makes a deal – they will provide Rudi with a sail boat he can use to escape to Norway if he fixes the machine gun. The class could dedicate a section of a working wall to collecting examples of vocabulary used in the narrative with which they are unfamiliar. So much so, he goes out of his way to show Clogger how to uncock the gun and operate the safety catch. They have to redefine their grasp of good and evil several times while they hide the enemy from the adult world that dictates the rules they live by. The children, on hearing troops speak in a foreign language, open fire on them with the gun, believing they are a German invasion force.I also loved the way Rudi -the German rear-gunner who falls in Garmouth- cooperates with the children while staying at the fort under Audrey's care and fixing the machine gun for them. Indeed, towards the end of the novel, the police sergeant pursuing Chas and the gun gets a lead precisely because a bullet from the weapon lodged in someone's wall. xxii+156(last blank), text illustrations including maps, glossary, terms and abbreviations, Battalion chronology, bibliography, appendices including rolls and honours, index; med. Honor Before Reason: Invoked by the Headmaster of Garmouth Boys Grammar before caning Chas for his method of fighting Boddser. You'll have to read the book, but Rudi, hiding away from reality with them in their bunker, becomes a friend and father figure to all the children.

It is only during the next bombing that he gains another plan, to gather his friends together to create a fortress of their own to fight the Germans themselves. My response after reading chapters 1 - 5 is, this book so far is going great, im enjoying it very much and i want to keep reading. Living in the fortress with Clogger and Nicky, Rudi realizes, is a good place - it's warm, comfortable and there is always food to eat. My grandfather prompted me to read this book when I was about 11 and I thought that it was absolutely brilliant. Things are further complicated when the gang attempts to shoot down a Me 110, causing it to actually be shot down by a trio of three Spitfires.

The last few years have, and I think I can say this without fear of contradiction or reprisal, been a bit much. Despair Event Horizon: Suggested of Nicky's mum, who seems to have turned to alcohol and drunken sex with the sailors billeted with her out of grief after the death of her husband and Nicky's father at sea. Like a more hopeful Lord of the Flies, a group of children abandoned by society in the chaos of the blitz discover a machine gun at the crash site of a German war plane and use it to set up their own secret base and plan to defend England. But the attack on his plane leaves the machine gun broken and it doesn’t take Chas long to figure out that Rudi could fix it.He has realized how much he owes the children, and he has realized that nobody cares about him back in Germany anyway. Try and Follow: The police suspect the children are hiding the missing machine gun, so try following them to their hideout.
