About this deal

But what drives the story is Fluke's finding his way home to his wife and daughter and uncovering what reason his life ended so suddenly. Naturally curious, intelligent and formidable, the sisters decide to become ‘detectors’ and discover what happened to Elizabeth Chester.

I also felt like reading something a little less highbrow than a lot of my current reading so it ticked all the boxes. During all this, Herbert answers the meaning to life, the universe and everything (and it's not 42). I’ve talked with, eaten with, and played with so many different species my head aches trying to remember them all. This is the first Herbert story I read, I'm pretty sure 'The Rats' is next on my list, as I've heard from a few people that they are good stories. This book was a real departure from other James Herbert books which are known for as being horrors, written in a gruesome style. The novel itself centres on Fluke, a mongrel who wanders the streets, driven by hunger and hunting a quarry he can not define. It’s not until later in the novel that he is able to discuss this aspect of his existence with a wise badger. I won’t reveal what happens at the end but Fluke now is determined to complete his odyssey back to his human family even though the badger he meets tries to dissuade him from doing so. Rumbo takes Fluke under his wing and shows him how to survive in the city by both begging and stealing.

It was actually my favourite Herbert, even though it’s his least representative and probably his least influential. For the first half of the novel, the various adventures that Fluke finds himself within are both exciting and heart-warming, as well as enabling Herbert to really build upon the characterisation of Fluke. During his life as a dog, Fluke gets to know his family better and realizes that he had been a distant workaholic.

From the master of British Horror, James Herbert, Fluke is the story of comes a story about a dog driven by an impulse he can't ignore.

Enraged by this and that Jeff is now dating Carol, Fluke viciously attacks him when he visits the house, and ends up getting put outside. Walker’s excellent dystopian novel featuring dual narratives, that of Reg the human and - most memorably - that of Lineker the dog.

In fact, the whole book reads more like a thought experiment than a fully-fledged novel, a situation that isn’t helped by how short it was. Then, upon finding out it was the third in the series, I went ahead and got my hands on the two prior books. He monologues that he finally accepted that he can no longer be the family man he should have been, and that he should just cherish the life he has now. Meanwhile, her friend Esther Summeson, who believes she is an orphan, gradually discovers the truth of her identity. Somewhere in the depths of his consciousness was a memory clawing its way to the surface, tormenting him, refusing to let him rest.In the first of the series they hear of the disappearance of a young wife and mother, who has vanished from her home, Chester Grange, leaving behind a room covered in blood. I was mildly confused to begin with we are thrown into the story by seeing everything through a dog's eyes, and of course, he described things differently than humans would. I've talked with, eaten with, and played with so many different species my head aches trying to remember them all.
