Description

Four kids gather together at school on a Saturday for a detention but this is like no normal detention. The initial plot of this book reminded me of 'One of us is lying' with 4 students in detention and no mobile phones.

I kept hoping for a plot twist since the “bad guys” were plain evil from the start and the other scary parts were stupid, not explained with magic or science, it just happened. Having no choice but to work together to try and stop all this but could there be a reason why this is all happening and why Hallie, Angelo, Gustav and Naira have been made to have detention. One thing is for certain though…I will never be able to hear Incy Wincy Spider in the same way again. Dread Wood is a YA spooky and creepy story to really make you not want to get a detention at school! They know each other by name, reputation or being in classes together at primary school, but have barely spoken to each other in years. Not for the faint-hearted, this edge-of-seat horror is hard to put down, with many chapters ending on a cliff-hanger. The creep factor gradually builds into the nightmare these teens must work together to defeat and save one another's lives, and the life of their teacher. They have their flaws, but in the end, they do what is right, they stick together and they help one another out, which is such a fantastic thing in a book like this. Gustav is described as "walking chaos", Naria being the "uptight, overachiever", and Hallie as "vegetarian, an LGBTQ+ ally, and welcome of refugees.

Dread Wood was a frightening, creepy, sinister read that had me both terrified and on the edge of my seat. Dread Wood follows Angelo and classmates Hallie, Gustav, and Naria as they head to detention on a Saturday. When I started the book I had planned on taking my time with it and reading it over a few days but once I started it I couldn't stop reading it.

I enjoyed the set up of the 4 kids, finding out the connection they all had in common other than classmates, because they were not friends. That was one creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy book, jeez i had goosebumps reading it, absolutely hated reading it but couldn't put it down cause i wanted to know what's gonna happen next. I didn’t notice this, which meant that I had a very creepy surprise when I realised that the kids were facing off against giant spiders.

I read and reviewed this book for a blog tour, so thank you to the blog tour organiser for having me on this tour. Middle-grade readers who love a bit of action, adventure, mystery, and a few scary moments grab a copy of this book.

There was a lot of action and adventure throughout the book and you can really feel what the characters are feeling. Check out Jennifer Killick’s assembly video where she shares children’s books she’s enjoyed, where she loves to read, her top tips for enjoying reading and more! There’s plenty of humour to balance out the scares and this is the perfect book for those of us who loved goosebumps and want to relive that feeling. Overall, this is a fast-paced book that I loved so much and can't wait for the next book in this series. UPDATED/ADDITION: I was just putting the book on the shelves and I noticed THAT THERE ARE SPIDERS ON THE COVER!I found the manor on the property to be quite spooky, although I would have really loved to read more about it, have some more descriptions of it, as most of the plot takes place outside or in other buildings.
