The Canasta Cask Matured and 1998 Manzanilla Cask Finish will be available globally, while the 17-year-old Triple Cask Moine, an experimental peated expression, will be sold exclusively at the distillery and at bunnahabhain.com . Otherwise, I would recommend something similar to the Plasencia Reserva Original as a good cigar pairing. It’s spicy and although it does have character, it doesn’t have too much body. Therefore, it’s capable of contrasting the wine’s flavours without overwhelming it. Firstly, Canasta will likely be enjoyed alongside desserts, especially during the wintertime. You could certainly consider dishes like Christmas cake and mince pies. Yet, you could probably go a bit further with some apple or fruit pies or tarts. First of all, the most common types of sweet sherry are typically referred to as “creams”. Despite the misleading name, cream sherries don’t contain any dairy products but are a blend of naturally sweet sherries and the varieties listed above. As we approach Fèis Ìle 2023, we're taking a look at this years Bunnahabhain offerings. Bunnahabhain Fèis Ìle 2023: Canasta Cask Matured

Once fermented, the wine will contain a high level of residual sugars, which imparts a distinctively sweet character. It is then aged like an Oloroso, resulting in notes of dried fruit such as raisins, prunes, and figs. Manzanilla sherry is famed for being coastal, salty and nutty – characteristics that are similar to Bunnahabhain's spirit character. As the most northerly distillery on Islay, Bunnahabhain renowned for their unpeated, classically sherried single malts. This limited release is quintessentially Bunnahabhain in style. Fully matured in rare Canasta sherry casks, its resting place was once home to skilfully blended sherries made from Palomino and Pedro Ximenez grapes. It was during the 18 th and 19 th century when Scottish and Irish immigrants made the journey west to the United States and took their beloved drink with them. The Prohibition era in the States and a 150-year-long Scottish ban on alcohol ensured that whisky distilleries and drinking was driven underground until the mid-20 th century. Alongside its investment announcement, Bunnahabhain has revealed three new limited-edition single malts to be released in August/September.Canasta Casks are very classical in style, with the balance of Oloroso sherry imparting flavours of spice, and the Pedro Ximenez adding layers of complexity, richness & sweetness. Word is out that Caol Ila would be releasing two limited edition bottlings to commemorate the festival Upon reduction, we're finding an increased bitterness, as well as a stronger sherry influence, consistent with the nose. The finish also showcases more sweetness. The mouthfeel remains satisfying, although it now carries a slightly hotter sensation. As the whisky sits in the glass, we also find notes of banana loaf and lime zest. Personally, we would avoid adding water, as we prefer it undiluted, but others may choose to add a few drops. Conclusion For this year's Cairdeas, it is made from 3/4 second-fill Madeira cask-finished liquid, with 1/4 from first-fill White Port casks.

The whisky aims to capture numerous variables in the brand’s casks, such as oak species, growth environment and the technical aspects of toasting, charring, and seasoning. Bottled at 46.7% ABV and matured in refill Bourbon casks, tasting notes include aromas of toasted barley with floral cut grass, while the palate is said to offer apples and shortbread. The finish is described as both refreshing and sweet. The 1998 Manzanilla Cask Finish utilises casks from a sherry variety that is famed for its nutty and salty characteristics, also said to be complementary to the distillery's spirit character, and has been bottled (also non-chill filtered) at 52.3% ABV. However, sherry’s regulatory body does recognise two categories based on an average age of wine passing through a Solera: With core releases going through to more limited and older whiskies, as well as plenty of top-tier drams to toast a celebration or a hole-in-one, such as Macallan M Decanter, Glenfarclas 30yo and Highland Park 40yo. We also wanted to use this opportunity to showcase some of the incredible new distilleries in Scotland, such as Nc’Nean, Lindores Abbey and Kingsbarns. Brendan McCarron, master distiller at Bunnahabhain, said: "We’re so excited to welcome whisky fans from across the globe to celebrate the world of Bunnahabhain at Fèis Ìle once again. We look forward to the festival every year as it is a great way to spend time with whisky lovers, bring them into our world and share some fantastic drams in such a beautiful setting. Unlike port, whisky, and other alcoholic spirits like cognac, sherry is rarely labelled with an age statement. Given the use of solera systems where the wine is transferred through a series of barrels, you can’t easily calculate the age of the resulting product.

Scotland’s oldest privately-owned whisky distillery, Bladnoch, has unveiled a collection of five single malts that celebrate the ‘natural unpredictability’ of whisky making. The Dragon Series draws its inspiration from a fractional curve in mathematics The Bodegas Williams & Humbert wineries are located in the triangle formed by Jérez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. This triangle is characterised by a peculiar microclimate, made up of the rivers Guadalquivir and Guadalete, called ‘the Mesopotamian valley’ of western Andalusia. Typically, sherry is aged for a minimum of two years in a solera system. Therefore, the above age statements are quite rare yet particularly sought after by connoisseurs. What Next? Bunnahabhain whisky was founded in 1881 and today is the only distillery on the island of Islay to use pure spring water in its production process. The water is drawn from the Margadale River and avoids being changed by the plentiful peat that is in the area. While not all Bunnahabhain whiskies are unpeated, their signature blend is an unpeated whisky with much lighter tones. For those looking for a smokier formula, try the Bunnahabhain Moine whisky, which contains Islay peat. Now that you have read about the different types of sherry, learn more about it with our resources: Nose: Classic sherried nose; sweet and caramelised fruits, honey roasted nuts, waves of cinnamon and clove with a hint of rancio Islay's Bunnahabhain Distillery is celebrating the 2023 Fèis Ìle musical and whisky festival with three limited-edition expressions. Currently, Williams & Humbert is the largest winery in Europe, and its distributor, Sovisur, distributes all its products together with wines from other denominations such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda or Rías Baixas. Sherry is best known as a dry fortified wine. Indeed, port tends to get the limelight where sweet fortified wines are concerned. You can also learn about it with our guides to port wine.

On the palate, the aroma is complemented by the taste of sweet and tangy apricots, with a hint of nutmeg that adds depth and complexity. Canasta’s nose is quite intense, especially if you leave it to sit in the glass for a while. You’re looking at some primary notes of figs and raisins. Meanwhile, it reveals secondary and tertiary notes of walnuts and cinnamon. However, these are quite faint and you’ll mostly detect the dried fruits. Finally, Manzanilla is a variant of fino sherry that’s particularly light. It’s named after a chamomile infusion as its flavours are said to resemble the herb. It distinguishes itself by being made closer to the coast near the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. We have attempted to demonstrate the resultant beauty that occurs from the natural unpredictability inherent within our whisky-making process, which we endeavour to control over the decades.

Best Pairings With Canasta Sherry

Compared to the blended creams listed above, a PX sherry is naturally sweeter at over 212 grams per litre, which is why it’s often used as a sweetener in itself. The palate had plumes of damp wood smoke, dusty coal embers, sweet peat smoke, BBQ sauce, chilli glaze and root beer cordial, followed by more iodine, antiseptic, eucalyptus oils and salted liquorice." You may also notice that the cork is actually a stopper that can easily be replaced. This choice of cork is probably because you won’t likely drink an entire bottle in one sitting. Indeed, it contains oxidatively aged oloroso sherry, which is quite resilient. Similarly, the sugar content will act as a natural preservative.
