About this deal

The younger daughter Roop is something of a psychopath in the making - prone to pulling the wings of insects or otherwise torturing them and to an obsession with blood and death. Moth is dedicated to my mother, Merlin. She was an incredible woman who raised me and my sisters alone. Mum died at young age when we were in our mid-20s, but I know she would have loved Moth and the way it has been embraced by children, teachers and parents on both sides of the Atlantic. Using Moth in schools The six-spot burnet is the most common British burnet moth and the only species with six red spots on each forewing. Concise Guide to Moths of Great Britain and Ireland. Paul Waring, Martin Townsend and illustrated by Richard Lewington.

For the first time in print, celebrated storytelling phenomenon The Moth presents fifty spellbinding, soul-bearing stories selected from our extensive archive (eighteen years-plus years and 20,000-plus stories strong). Inspired by friends telling stories on a porch, The Moth was born in small-town Georgia, garnered a cult following in New York City, and then rose to national acclaim with the wildly popular podcast and Peabody Award– winning weekly public radio show, The Moth Radio Hour. Mom: Why do you think that Isabel Thomas wrote this story? What do you think she wants us to learn? I know little of this moment in history. However, Moth has inspired me to learn more. This book gives the reader emotion and despair from one family’s point of view in a very impactful way.Field Guide to the MOTHS of Great Britain and Ireland Paul Waring & Martin Townsend. Illustrated by Richard Lewington The final member of the household is a Muslim Ayah who Bappu in his idealism allows to stay in the house longer than is safe for anyone. The prose was lyrical and courageous, championing Alma's father for his dedication to seeing women as human beings. But Razak did not shy away from depicting the downside of a non-misogynistic patriarch during a time of widespread violence either. Complexity and nuance, yes please! This is but one example of many.

MissHallreads asked I asked her year 6 class to present the facts from Moth in any way they wished. One of her EAL pupils created this absolutely stunning poem Alma: the beating heart of the novel. We meet her as a precocious 14-year old who becomes entangled with the chaos of Partition with devastating consequences It was longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize for debut novels, and is quite an impressive debut, mostly set in Delhi at the time of the partition that created independent India and Pakistan.I read this book due to its longlisting for the 2022 Desmond Elliott Prize for debut novelists, although I had been aware of it as it featured on the influential Observer Best Debut Novelists of the Year feature for 2021 alongside such other successful and impressive books as “Little Scratch” (2021 Desmond Elliott Prize shortlist), “Open Water” (2021 Desmond Elliott Prize longlist, Costa First Novel Award winner), “Lear Wife” and “Assembly” (also on the 2022 Desmond Elliott Prize and for me the best novel of 2021). That’s a pretty utilitarian summary, but Thomas’s book is very lyrical and Egneus’s beautiful illustrations make for a wonderful read. A great opener for a lesson on adaptation. I’m hoping my Biology teachers will embrace this. I won’t say this is by far the best partition literature that I have read, however I did enjoy this unique insight which encapsulated historical events and experiences flawlessly. There were a few instances where Hindi phrases were misprinted which I am willing to overlook as it was written by someone who is uninitiated to the language and they were far and few! Moth is a story of resilience & courage. It is a very forceful read, one that is both heart-breaking and fascinating. I was, and am, very ignorant of those years in India’s history. The brutality and inhumanity of man against man is unimaginable to my mind. In creating this close-knit family with all their eccentricities and foibles, Melody Razak gives the reader a snapshot into a time when there was so much dread, so much pain, yet the domestic rituals were maintained where possible to instil a sense of normality and to help cope with the intense fear that lingered in the mind of all. Flowers they like to visit to feed on include aubrieta (often spelled aubretia), buddleia, viper's bugloss and red valerian. In 2019, Thomas Easterbrook's photo of a hummingbird hawkmoth sipping from a salvia flower won the 10 years and under category of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

All this shown via the tribulations faced by an upper class brahmin family in Delhi and their close Muslim friends and associates.. In honor of the 20th anniversary of storytelling phenomenon The Moth, ALL THESE WONDERS is an unforgettable collection about risk, courage, and facing the unknown, featuring contributors likeTig Notaro, John Turturro, and Meg Wolitzer.Edited by The Moth’s artistic directorCatherine Burnsand featuring a foreword byNeil Gaiman, ALL THESE WONDERSis a spellbinding celebration of twenty years of Moth storytellers who have stepped up to the microphone and bared their souls to a crowd of strangers. I received a free uncorrected proof copy of this book via the Goodreads Giveaways program and would like to thank anyone who was involved in making that happen! The book is full of memorable characters. Alma’s sister, Roop, is memorable for perhaps the wrong reasons: a very young girl who shows all the signs of being some kind of psychopath! But the rest of the family, including servants, is brought to life very vividly as are the events of Partition. This is a book about natural selection. The story starts off with a peppered moth awakening from its cocoon, followed by multiple other moths waking up too. There are two types of moth mentioned in the book: light peppered moths, and dark peppered moths. The dark peppered moths are as dark as charcoal. The story discusses how predators are searching for food, and end up eating the charcoal peppered moths but not the light peppered ones. The reason why is because the light peppered moths can camouflage into their environment and the charcoal peppered ones cannot. However, humans build coal plants and it ends up covering the forest with smoke and sod. This time, the charcoal peppered moths blend in better and the light peppered moths get eaten. The story discusses how the moths that are surviving are passing on their genes and traits therefore causing an increase in whatever type of moth is surviving.A book aimed at KS2 with a heavy focus on change, survival, evolution and natural selection. I feel this book is really good at showing children why animals adapt and how they change over time. Pupils at Holbrook School in Coventry practised writing very concise non-fiction by crafting tweets to summarize the peppered moths life cycle! These moths are a lovely fleeting sight, flying in sunshine and hovering in front of flowers, sipping nectar like a hummingbird.'

The litany of names starts off as a 5-minute bulletin. By the time it comes around to the first week of November there will be 1400 daily messages of girls lost and found, using up to 3 hours of airtime." Whilst it is Partition that drives the book forward, the focus is predominantly on the women. The Guardian review finishes by saying: With its unflinching focus on violence against women, her strong, captivating debut tells a story that is at once firmly rooted in a time and place and yet pressingly relevant to the here and now. Alessandro Giusti, Lepidoptera Curator at the Museum, explains that brilliantly coloured moths are often day-flying species or those keen to display their distastefulness to predators. Everything I experienced – from the architecture, people, landscape, colour (the food!), the places of worship and daily religious rituals – is filtered into the novel’s minutiae."

Moths' roles in nature

Remember to submit your questions for me via the Great Science Share! I look forward to answering them! Moth Hall of Fame Alessandro says, 'The pattern on the wings is variable and no two garden tiger moths are exactly alike - even the two wings of an individual can be different. The Museum's collections have specimens of this moth with all sorts of variations.' They frequent fens, open woodland, heaths and scrubby places, laying their eggs on the bark of the larval foodplants such as goat willow, grey willow and poplars. Red apple hair clip. Sweet milk pudding. A fair haired boy at the shore. The sacrifice? The moth. Ninety three women dead in the well. Bappu/Bhai is a rather timid dreamer - increasingly unable to reconcile his idealistic view of a tolerant household and society with the terrible sectarian hatred and violence around him. His one moment of bravery was went he went with bribes to rescue the house cook Dilchain from her in-laws after her abusive husband burnt himself to death trying to kill her – a rescue motivated partly by principle and partly by love of her cooking and which leads to some unrequired love for him from Dilchain (who as the higher caste family members lose their way in the horrors of partition increasingly leads the family from below).
