I have some old mountainmen/cavemen buddies that think nothing of taking new gear into the mountains without prior setup or testing, and it drives me crazy every time. This article and others that talk about it’s inefficiency convince me that it is not a good deal despite it’s low cost.

I placed a tunafish can lid on top with small holes drilled around the center as to better disperse the heat. Personally I'd go for the options others have suggested above rather than the BRS, but not really for safety reasons, more of efficiency and usability.This is something you can actually make yourself and, while being extremely light, offers no flame control. We found the pot supports to be surprisingly sturdy with small to medium cookware but have heard mentions of them deforming under heat and load. Obviously, using this stove is much more labor intensive, and there are a lot of areas where using it is prohibited, but most of the time I really enjoy the process of creating a tiny contained cookfire and love that I can go super minimalist. This stove is perfect for carrying inside a titanium mug along with a small gas canister for midday hot drinks or heating food on day hikes. You want to ensure that the surface for your canister is flat without too many rocks or debris beneath it.

However the common problem i see with it is if the flame ( from wind ) moves to the stands it can melt the metal.

This stuff is stiff enough to stand up on its own, it breaths well, so heat build up is less of a concern, and the stuff doesn’t burn, melt, or get hot. I have used my pack as a wind barrier and I also carry some aluminum foil that I have used as a wind shield.

Now Jim has done us a good service by starting this thread, and letting us know that bad things can happen to some people.The Soto Windmaster can be better regulated and my preference will always fall with it if I’m cooking my own home-made meals.
