If you point at something across the room, does your child look at it? ( For Example, if you point at a toy or an animal, does your child look at the toy or animal?) Answer 1 I was diagnosed 2 years ago at age 41. The main voice in this book is teenage "M" who shares her story with autism, being a teenager and wanting to be "normal". This inspiring and touching novel really gives you a feel of what living with autism and anxiety is like. 13-year-old M lives a tough life as she struggles coping with anxiety in everyday situations, most of all at school. She describes anxiety as being a beast that stops her from living a normal life. All M wants to do is be like all her friends who she classifies as normal. With her later diagnosis of autism we see M start to open up and talk to people about her problems as she copes with her diagnosis. If you have autism, if you are a sufferer of anxiety, or you know someone who is, this is a perfect read for you. This novel helps you to realise that you are not alone and people DO understand exactly what you are going through. As a sufferer of anxiety this book made me feel like there was light and hope at the end of the tunnel, and with a little support and guidance with life's inevitable ups and downs we CAN have a glorious and fulfilled life. -- Jasmine, age 16 The Limpsfield girls certainly found their voice and it has all the urgency, immediacy and sheer vibrancy of teenage life... I hope that M's journey will help girls with autism making that same journey through their early teen years to find themselves and believe in themselves as well as help others understand and believe in them. --Robert Pritchett, Director Autism Accreditation, The National Autistic SocietyBecause of the unique mixture of symptoms in each child, severity can sometimes be difficult to determine. It's generally based on the level of impairments and how they impact the ability to function. Does your child understand when you tell him or her to do something? ( For Example, if you don't point, can your child understand “put the book on the chair” or “bring me the blanket”?) Answer 18 Thank God awareness of Autism and Aspergers Syndrome in girls and women is spreading. For years it was believed that only makes were able to be on the Autism Spectrum, this has led to a tidal wave of diagnosis in females as it's recognised that traits can be very different between the two. By telling M's story, the students of Limpsfield Grange School have told their own stories and have done everyone a valuable service. Not only have they provided awareness that autism doesn't just affect boys and helped readers get priceless insight into how autism works, but they have also helped parents and caregivers of kids with autism, like myself, be more aware of their own behaviors and provided those with autism with a book that just might help them understand more about this thing called autism that seems to take up so much of the space around and within them. M's counselor's messages to M about her value as a person being about so much more than her autism were something that all people should hear, and I'm incredibly grateful that I discovered this little gem of a book.
