Description
At the heart of every 3D printer is a bed, and the Sidewinder X1’s heart beats for you. It offers a huge 300 x 300 x 400 mm space with a porous glass surface coated in ceramic. While the spec sheet indicates a max heated bed temp of 80°C, it is actually capable of 120°C, which comes in handy when printing with temperature-sensitive materials. Unfortunately, the bed doesn’t do a great job of temperature dispersion, so it’s cooler along the outer edges, causing adhesion problems with larger objects.
Inside the Artillery Sidewinder X1, the cables have been properly fixed. The SWX1 screwed on: good cable management Some of the newer 3D printers come with stepper drivers meant to reduce noise during operations. However, when the printers have cheap fans, the noise is not reduced. The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is equipped with a large 310 x 310 mm glass-coated textured heat bed that allows for large-format 3D printing. It accounts for improved layer bonding and provides just enough adhesion to create PLA prints without heating the bed. Besides, it offers impressive heating speed and can heat up to 60°C in just 50 seconds and reach 100°C in less than two and a half minutes. Taking into account that the bed is quite large, it offers excellent heating speed. The maximum build plate temperature is 130°C. There’s no profiles for PETG or any other materials included – and with this “improved” hotend, the printer caps out at around 240, or at most 250°C before the PTFE starts to get damaged.
About Artillery
If we look at the electronics, it’s an 8-bit MKS GEN L mainboard, coupled with a 32-bit controller for the touchscreen. I was even able to print a test cube successfully with no fan cooling the heatsink (I forgot to plug the fan) but after it was finished the filament clogged the heat-break. The heatsink was hot to the touch. So, not a good idea. My recommendation is to use a new Bi-Metal heat break. I covered this on my Bi-Metal heat break article where I also did some temperature measurements to test the thermal performance.
This is an important step on making sure that the Z rods are properly installed and the stepper motor vibration or misalignment is not translated directly into the Z axis. Temperature variations caused by improper PID tuning
What’s in the Box?
Artillery is a relatively young Shenzhen-based additive manufacturing company that was established in 2018. Its current lineup consists of three consumer-grade FDM 3D printers. The company entered the 3D printing market in January 2019 by launching the Sidewinder X1, a budget-friendly 3D printer that was largely recognized by the 3D printing community. After such success, the company launched their second machine, the Genius, another budget-friendly 3D printer with a slightly smaller build volume than that of its predecessor. The latest 3D printer Artillery made was the Hornet — an entry-level educational machine that was launched in 2020. All in all, 3D printers made by Artillery can be characterized as powerful machines that bring good value for their money. The Sidewinder only begins to swing a little at great heights. When this happens, you should reduce the printing speed or stiffen the frame afterwards. Conclusion: Is the Artillery Sidewinder X1Worth It? If you were hoping for a simple “yes” or “no”, I have to disappoint you. The Artillery Sidewinder X1 is really good, does a hell of a lot right. However, it’s not perfect. You only notice this in most places after prolonged intensive use. Most of my recommendations and calibration tips involve modifying values in the EEPROM. Unfortunately, the Sidewinder X1 arrived with EEPROM disabled and this makes things a bit harder to setting the machine properly.
