This year’s Fire HD 10 lineup comes with an appreciated improvement to the design released in 2019: the bezels around the screen are now uniform, making it easier to hold and giving it a more modern look than before. It offers long enough battery life to keep kids busy for car rides or flights, has a headphone jack for when wireless headphones run out of juice, and reduces adult anxiety thanks to its top-of-the-line parental controls and endless supply of kid-friendly content.

We think that’s better for watching video but it feels a little odd in portrait mode where its proportions make us feel like we’re holding an enormous phone. The 10-inch screen is perfect for displaying picture books and comics, and parental controls help you keep your kids safe as they read, watch, and browse. I can selectively adjust how much time they have playing games, reading books, or watching video before the tablet locks them out for the rest of the day.Parents can limit which apps children have access to, as well as how much time they spend on each activity.

Both kids appreciated the larger screen and better sound from the 10-inch tablet compared to their older 8-inch models. Given how slow and frustrating their old tablets are whenever I have to use them for anything, I think parents considering upgrading to new models should probably just go ahead and do it.

Since many of the apps for Fire OS are built with weak processing power in mind, you don’t notice it too much. It might work fine for scanning the occasional document, but the phone you have in your pocket almost certainly has a better camera attached to it. For a far superior display and a greater selection of apps, the 9th-gen iPad is the best entry-level tablet for most people and our Editors' Choice, but it costs nearly twice as much as the Fire HD 10 and doesn't come with a rugged case. Fire is great for apps and games as well as reading books and streaming videos, while a robust design makes it a durable device to stand up to the stresses of everyday life. The kids loved it - they found it very easy to use and to get started with, and plenty of apps and games they like.
