The latter – an auto-start at a scheduled time – will be handy for those wanting to shoot a sunrise while they stay in bed. Lowlight performance is weak, as is the case with all action cameras, so if the lights drop, your phone will likely do a better job of capturing videos. When shooting in FreeFrame mode, there isn't scope to adjust the degree of stabilization – that's managed post-capture – but in standard video mode, you can choose between three levels or turn it off.

Thanks to the FreeFrame mode, you can capture footage without having to worry about framing, then crop it losslessly later in either 16:9, 19:6 or 1:1. The core unit couldn't be simpler with just a one-button press, and the recording status is illustrated by an LED light on the front. However, its motion compensation isn’t up to much, with any horizontal movement – such as pans across landscapes – appearing rather jumpy. The presence of FlowState image stabilization (only for Video and Freeframe Video modes) and 360 Horizon Lock (though only for FreeFrame Video mode) further add to the impression that this is a feature-packed, pro-level action camera – but its lack of 4K and 5. Image quality is pretty decent and Insta360’s FlowState image stabilisation is very impressive indeed.

In testing, I tried putting the Go at the center of my chest on the magnetic pendant for some regular and TimeShift video footage. I found the image stabilisation struggled to maintain smoothness without introducing shimmering artefacts into clips, even when I was indulging in relatively gentle activities. The GO 3 had been created to fit a number of accessories and mounting options including first-person POV videos. You can free up space by transferring clips to your phone, of course, but this operation will use up battery life on both devices. However, it does have some limitations – notably the lack of a microSD card slot and removable battery and poor low-light image stabilisation.
