Description

You don’t have to be a Barcelona fan to enjoy 10284 Camp Nou – FC Barcelona. Nor even a football fanatic. You don’t need to have an intricate knowledge of the club’s history, its connection to its local community or an understanding of its wildly out-of-control finances to be able to take in a lot of what 10284 FC Barcelona Camp Nou rewards as a LEGO experience. Bring on a baseball stadium please. Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Yankee Stadium, etc. Once built, that is thanks to this continued and – even though we talk about it a great deal – still underappreciated level of attention to detail that the LEGO Group brings to sets in this current era of design. Granted, the wider audience for this LEGO for Adults set may only come into this model with a broad knowledge of the subject matter. Importantly, then, if all you know of Camp Nou is the coloured seats and the general shape of the overall stadium and its four stands, and you like football and LEGO, then 10284 Camp Nou – FC Barcelona immediately impresses. Given that Man United and Barcelona have fan bases that go way beyond their local areas I can see why they have done them. As a display piece based on such an imposing and iconic real-world stadium, how it sits on display is crucial to its appeal, and in every way 10284 Camp Nou – FC Barcelona impresses. It’s one of those LEGO sets that your eyes just glaze over as you take it in, and that highlights a different detail each time you look closer – it’s one to enjoy on display for a long time, if you can find the shelf space.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who got in touch with TLG with the strong suggestion that Architecture Stadia becomes a new product line. Looks well designed but also incredibly repetitive to build. 5.5k pieces for €330 is good value, especially for a licensed set.Messi has recently left his longstanding club, thus dropping the allure of buying this particular set (for some). You build the stadium in quarters and these wrap around the central pitch to complete the model, and whatever resentment you may feel for how long that took you, it all dissipates because what sits before you just instantly sings as a LEGO set. The contrast in colour between the exterior and interior is perfect and as vibrant as the real thing, and the sheer size of the set is as impressive as you would hope it to be. FC Barcelona fans will love showing their passion for one of the world’s most celebrated soccer clubs with this rewarding building project. Build all the details of the mighty Camp Nou Stadium like the Lateral stand with its iconic ‘Més Que Un Club’ motto and the covered Tribuna stand, with press booths, plus the pitch itself. The model splits into 5 sections for access to each area. The new LEGO FC Barcelona Camp Nou set is fantastically detailed. Features include the stands, pitch, team tunnel, media boxes and even the team’s coach. The score board also references the club’s momentous 5-0 win over rivals Real Madrid in 2010 and two of the stands proudly feature the “Mes que un Club” motto that is known by fans around the world. As of now, we can epect to see the LEGO Camp Nou stadium launch later this fall come October, but an official release date has yet to be confirmed. It’ll most likely launch come the first of the month given the usual trend with new debuts. Pricing on the other hand is a little more up in the air.

Tied to Catalonia’s traditions that include its own language and culture, Barcelona is a more politicised club than most others and has previously ( and quite recently) found itself a focal point for the region’s search for autonomy from Spain. Even if its official position is one of neutrality, there are any number of examples of the respect the club pays to its local community and region, from communicating everything in media in Catalan (alongside Spanish and international languages), to incorporating the colours and design of the Catalan flag into more than one away kit design. The two football clubs they've done so far have large worldwide fan-bases (probably very popular in Denmark), so on paper there is a market for them. I've seen some alternative Lego brands do stadium sets for most football clubs. Putting the two stand sections together with the playing field gives you an idea of how things are progressing. This “half-shell” amphitheater would almost work as a smaller display option, except for the exposed scaffolding under the seats. It wouldn’t be super difficult to custom build a “cover” for the sides if you wanted to, though.

There’s not much else to go on at the moment, but it’s safe to assume the home of Barcelona football club – which is the biggest stadium in Europe, and the fourth-largest football ground in the world – will be recreated in microscale, following the path laid out by 10272 Old Trafford, and will reuse that set’s printed pitch pieces.

I think like Old Trafford this set is aimed at getting football fans into Lego rather than the other way around, so I can understand why there are so many negative poll responses. Yeah, we have no idea what LEGOs internal data actually looks like, but we can make some summations... like that despite how much myself and everyone else seems to hate the show, 21302 mustve sold well enough to launch a theme of sitcom set sets. So with this release i think we can surmise that as others have said in this thread, 10272 probably sold really really well. But not to regular AFOLs, to football fans. Talking about how he approached the design of the set, Rok Zgalin Kobe, LEGO Set Designer commented: “To create the Camp Nou in LEGO form was a really enjoyable challenge, from bringing the stands to life to envisaging the players walking down the tunnel to the pitch, you can almost feel the atmosphere of a roaring home game. It is an impressive build – perfect for both FC Barcelona and LEGO fans.” I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

The Camp Nou is one of the symbols of FC Barcelona. We are therefore very proud to get the opportunity to jointly create this reproduction of the stadium with the LEGO Group that fans will be able to build from bottom to top and which represents the home of all Culers”.
