Another element that affects this is that once you claim a victory point, it’s yours forever even if you lose the thing you did to earn it. You could deploy caravans to establish diplomatic relationships with your neighbors or crush them with your military might. It’s almost like the map is too big… you never really have a problem accomplishing the victory conditions in your little corner of the map. More powerful technology cards not only bump up your tech dial, but provide you with some additional resources.

It really becomes stale after a few plays even though I know the terrain has to be that way to work with the utterly cool focus bar. Be warned though, invest in some plastic grip seal bags to keep the tokens separate as only a few are provided in the box and it helps with faster setup times. The same goes for the Victory agendas (enough with the Monuments already), as well as the Focus cards, even though tampering with the latter might lead to the whole design breaking down. At the head of your sovereign nation, you will develop civilization from prehistoric times, through to the modern age. The barbarian inclusion also falls flat within the game and acts more of an annoyance then a credible threat to your civilization. The same can be said for this game but it wasn’t so much “fun” as it was more like I had a ton of stuff going on so working all the angles took some focus. At the same time, I just get this sense that for the game you don’t get as much content as would be nice. The default way to play for this reviewer will be for players to build the map from scratch thereby adding even more fuel to the conflict in the game. Since the map starts small, you can talk about the map features such as natural wonders or city-states as they expose themselves throughout the game. In addition, there’s no way to customize a civilization’s diplomacy options, consisting only of four cards which often leave players disappointed. As it is, Civ: A New Dawn is definitely lighter, but after a full game it can give the feeling a heavier experience took place. At this time, A New Dawn sits nicely in the middle, but with the right investment in future developments, it could really flourish. If you made it this far and played the base game, you probably have some questions about the pacing or quality of life. Although attacking other players is helpful in the right conditions, you also have the opportunity to attack forts. By advancing their culture, science, economy, industry, and military, rulers can ensure their nation’s survival through the ages.

Cards within the focus row generally shift toward the fifth slot until they are used, which is when it moves back to the first slot again. To attack, you choose a target within range of one of your control tokens or cities, count up your attack power (and your target its defense power), and roll a 6-sided die to see who wins. Attacking in general feels sparse, especially in a two-player game and any conflict is resolved via dice and your terrain position, so not much wiggle room to improve your chances of victory. You might surround yourself with natural wonders, allowing you to plop world wonders in your cities like flowerbeds in a garden. This means everyone is within two or three tiles away from each other, allowing the option for the early game aggression that wasn’t possible in the base game.

Resources on the board can be collected and spent to help build Wonders, and Natural Wonders if controlled provide a specific resource every round (instead of being a 1-time use like normal resources). last but not least, there is now possibility for up to five players to lead their own civilizations and discover new areas! Very tactile; you slide a card down, do the action, and then slide over all your other Focus cards making them more powerful.A leader may choose to create a peaceful civilization defined by artistic and intellectual pursuits. Science allows you to advance your tech dial, which over time will allow you to upgrade your focus cards to stronger replacements.
