I'm always able to keep up with nuanced, complicated plots, but this one proved too much for me, so at some point in the middle I was completely lost. James - there is never a last name until he earns his pirate name - makes his way to the Magical Kingdoms where it seems all the books eventually tie together. Just do one little favor, and the sisters will reward him with his heart's desire - returning to Neverland. Well, he arrives and everything goes wrong - he's seen as an adult and rejected as a prospective Lost Boy. And it is not James' fondest wish that is achieved but Peter's. Despite the stale fat-to-curvy pattern, compelling world building with a Southern European, pseudo-Christian feel, reminiscent of Naomi Kritzer's Fires of the Faithful (2002), keeps this entry fresh.

And of course this book also had a starring role for the Odd Sisters. You either hate or love them, but I'm quite impressed with the big scheme and plot they're working on, especially when you keep in mind that time in this universe is a strange and not so lineair thing. In this book their role in everything was extremely nasty, especially because as a reader you already know how Hook's wish to find Neverland will end. You may think this tale as old as time has been told before. You may know about the beauty, and the beast, and the curse they broke together. But some stories have more than one ending. Some stories have more than one villain. The story wasn't very exciting. There was a lot of explanation and just James talking to the magical characters who might help him. aCutthroat pirate James Bartholomew, who longs to return to Neverland where he was taken as a child, gets his wish with the help of the Odd Sisters and a bit of magic, but soon he discovers the high price he must pay.
