The optional MXR M199 Tap Tempo switch adds a tap tempo function and increases the maximum delay time from 750ms to four seconds.

The EP103 offers the same echo effects and controls as the original EP-3 Echoplex in a compact pedal format that’s the size of a Phase 90, plus a few new features such as an Age mode, selectable stereo or mono modes, an optional tap tempo control, and more. All that’s missing is the sound-on-sound feature, but that’s what loopers are for. Cramer, Alfred W. (2009). Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century-Volume 2. Salem Press. p.514. Proceed With Caution-Built to Spill Frontman Doug Martsch Lets a Little Digital Into His Life". keyboardmag.com. Keyboard Magazine . Retrieved 20 April 2020. The Echoplex EP-3 tape echo unit is famous for its deliciously warm, organic modulation and sweet musical voice—a key component to some of the most iconic guitar tones from the '70s onward. The original EP-3 units, however, are expensive, temperamental, and larger than a VCR. The original EP-3’s echo effect has a characteristic lush, three-dimensional sound that combines delay and warm, natural-sounding reverb. Most digital emulations of this effect sound comparatively flat, but the EP103 absolutely nails the EP-3’s unique character. The Age control is the key to much of this charm, providing the perception of depth and a distinctive pitch warble that’s similar to chorus. Chords sound rich and lively, while individual notes retain body and punch. The echo effects also sound great in front of a distorted amp and maintain excellent definition and clarity. Gress, Jesse (April 2007). "10 Things You Gotta Do to Play Like Duane Allman". Guitar Player. pp.110–17.The Echoplex wasn't notable just for the delay, but also for the sound; it is "still a classic today, and highly desirable for a range of playing styles... warm, rich, and full-bodied." [8] The delay could be turned off and the unit used as a filter, thanks to the sound of the vacuum tubes. a b Hunter, Dave (2004). Guitar effects pedals: the practical handbook.
