Apparently, the case officers were too busy over-sharing with their best friends’ wives to pay attention to invasion details. We have a fjord in the middle of Mount Desert, a spectacular four-mile passage by water between promontories on either side. We're rich boys, after all, with no background, and we're playing around the world with the hearts of the poor. As he grew older, he grew bolder, and used to recite aloud from this unique tongue while wandering over the rocks.

When I read this book when it first came out, it directly inspired my curiosity about the cold war and then WWII. After all, since I’ve put this down, I’ve never once given a half-second’s thought to Harry, Kittredge, Harlot, or the rest. Then Augustus was so bold in later years as to have himself buried on his northern island—now our island—in the Frenchman’s dress apparel. There are allusions to his habits in an old sea-diary I have found in the library at Bar Harbor, and one voyage is cited “durying whych Farr ingaged in practize of piracie” and boarded a French frigate in the Caribbean, took its cargo of Cuban sugar, put the crew to sea in an open boat (except for those who would join him), and beheaded the commodore, who died in naked state because Farr had appropriated his uniform. At first it appears to be the autobiography of Harry Hubbard, which is made up of anecdotes of his life and actions with the CIA, covert operations in Uruguay, the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Mafia in the 60s and the assassination of JFK. It details the life of a CIA intelligence officer who has connections to the highest levels of the CIA. Being Mailer, the novel crawls with overbaked literary devices (much of the narrative’s related through letters from Hubbard to his wife Kittredge, and vice versa), credulity towards conspiracy theories (everything from the Kennedy Assassination to Marilyn Monroe to Watergate receives an “alternate explanation”), and the trials and tribulations of his protagonist’s penis (there’s an overlong passage on Hubbard’s bout with gonorrhea); the female characters, unsurprisingly, are prostitutes, floozies or Kittredge.

Once, as a young man, he had bartered five lobsters for a small Greek tome that belonged to a classics scholar at Harvard. The house sits alone on an island, not ten acres of spread, just a stone’s throw—literally one long throw—off the western shore of Mount Desert.

Underneath the cellar, it was originally a dugout built by my father after the Second World War when he still owned the Keep. It does not help that the sequel never came which could have provided more context to some of the threads that appeared to have randomly started or left hanging in this book. There are great yawning sections of psycho-babble that convince no one; letters about stuff no one gives a damn about; and the "To Be Continued" at the end of the novel made many readers throw their hands up in disgust.Mailer, in his afterword, pats himself on the back about how accurate his novel is, about how much inside dish he unearthed, and how his fiction is closer to the truth than anyone dares. that, in a particularly harrowing scene, Dix tries, unsuccessfully but deeply affectingly, to rape or seduce the still virginal young man. else would commit to print such writing as "Miami, soft as a powderpuff, murderous as a scorpion, lay suspended like Nirvana"? Harry is in on the planning for the Bay of Pigs, and makes his way to the shores of Cuba during the missile crisis.
