But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen? Thank you Pushkin Press and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others. Wait, I thought the SHADOWS companion novel was coming out in summer 2023? It was. The sales team has made some adjustments. My new publication schedule is as follows:

I throw the doors open wide, sight my mark, and fling my blade. The dagger lands true, embedding in his throat. I don’t retrieve it just yet. Time is precious now.

I absolutely adore this series, and whether you’ve read or haven’t read the first two books in the Pirate Queen series, you can dive straight into Sorinda’s story. Be warned there are spoilers for the first two books but, if you can’t wait dive in, although I recommend reading them first. No, but it was probably Miss Nyles coming by the kitchens. Probably turned tail the second she spotted us.” Authors, if you are a member of the Goodreads Author Program, you can edit information about your own books. Find out how in this guide. I absolutely loved that we got a new perspective in this book. I loved reading Alosa’s story in the first two books, but it was really nice to see Solinda’s story in this one. She is in the first two books, but in those I found her to be a bit mysterious and I was curious about her. She is both damaged and strong in a complex, but intriguing way. Kearan was introduced to us as a fat, ugly drunk (the stuff of romance heroes). After Sorinda emptied all his alcohol overboard, he started to clean himself up - so he no longer drinks and has put on some muscle, though of course he'll never be handsome. Fortunately, he appears to have got over the irritating little crush he harboured on her. She can't be dealing with pesky things like emotions. Right? Especially not when she and her crew wash up on an island, where she accidentally awakens Threydan, the immortal King of the Undersea, who decides he wants her as his bride.

Vordan’s been busy since he escaped. He commissioned a ship under a false name, hired himself a new crew, and slowly began to grow his prestige, starting on the island of Butana. I have no doubt he hoped to raise enough forces to eventually usurp Alosa’s throne. Why do people call out a greeting when something highly suspicious happens? Do they expect us monsters to announce ourselves? Sorinda finds herself captaining a ship and on an important mission for the pirate queen. She’s under no illusion, she’s an assassin that likes to hide in the dark and much prefers to go unnoticed, but given her new task, she’s faced with rising to the occasion. And also, Kieran is a part of her crew and trapped on a ship with him is taking all of her self restraint - not to run a rapier through him. It certainly makes for great reading. I loved their interactions with one another and I couldn’t stop reading (and also, a feature from our favourite littlest pirate Roslyn had me all kinds of happy!). I hold perfectly still and watch as Vordan stretches out his bad leg. Alosa once used her siren song to force him to jump from a two-story height. I’ll bet he thinks about her every time it stiffens from the cold. He leans over to rub at the muscles near his knee before standing. He takes a drink from something at his nightstand, puts out the lantern, then sits on the bed. Sorinda Veshtas is an assassin pirate with a whole trove of knives that she keeps sharpened, shining and at one arm's reach at all times. Kearan is the "bulky", once-drunkard who is an incredibly loyal and capable crewmate. Together on the Vengeance, sent by the pirate queen after the missing Wanderer, this is so much more than just their romance. This next chapter of pirating adventure turns it’s focus on Sorinda, deadly assassin and Pirate Queen Alosa’s newest captain, as she sails away on a mission to search for and rescue members of Alosa’s crew. This mission takes Sorinda far away from her comfort zone, mentally and physically. Charged with protecting her crew and transporting them far from balmy, tropical shores to frozen seas, icebergs, sea monsters, and ice islands.

The cover is live! I hope you all love the new covers for my pirate books as much as I do! I’m OBSESSED! One of the reasons I never got into Throne of Glass is because - even at age 11/12 - I felt very strongly that any character who was billed to me as a cutthroat assassin should, at some point, actually be a cutthroat assassin. This particular book opens with 18-year-old Sorinda Veshtas murdering an entire house of people, so we can safely say she's got cutthroat assassination in spades.Unfortunately, they accidentally awaken the King of the Undersea, who controls a siren artefact that grants him immortality and control of the undead; leaving Sorinda and the particularly infuriating Kearan with no choice but to save the world from the terrible King of the Undersea or fall prey to his control, and become his undead queen! Hello?” the remaining man calls out, likely having seen his crewman pulled out from his line of sight before the doors closed.

I pull his feet out from under him, climb atop his wriggling body, and prepare to go for the throat. The author has yet again captured the adventure, romance, and ruthless ways of the high seas in ... this fast-moving adventure with strong female characters." — School Library Journal on Daughter of the Siren Queen Can it be read without having read your other pirate books? Yes, but I think you’ll enjoy it more if you have read the Daughter of the Pirate King duology. The audiobook was very well done, and the narrator voiced each character believably. It was clear form the voices and accents who was who. The pacing of the narration was just right as was the emphasis and infections of the narrator.

Books

I also really enjoyed the male love interest, Kearan. Even though he always wears his heart of his sleeve when it comes to Sorinda, he only serves to be a safe space for Sorinda. Kearan is a beast of a man, but he’s 100% a cinnamon roll. Kearan made her face all of her shortcomings - or what she thought of as shortcomings and I loved both of them together. I also loved Kearan and Enwen's friendship but I'd also would have liked to see more of it.
