Sergei has been gathering wild plants since he the age of 13 when in a 6-month hike from Mexico to Canada, he and his raw-food family ran out of provisions and turned to forage for ultimate survival in the wild. I really enjoyed this book, though there were parts where I wanted to scream at Hap. There are so many red flags ahead of the trip and I know, personally, I never would have set out on this trip. I imagine that, were Hap in this situation today, he wouldn’t either. The discovery of an affair has broken the trust between Liv and Will, can a road trip save the marriage? Liv has set some tests for him to prove he’s changed, if he fails, well it might be more than the marriage that’s dead. Dirty Gourmet: Food For Your Outdoor Adventures, now extends its mission to get more people to eat well outdoors and have fun doing it.

In total honesty, I didn’t like this book (part of it is because Alex Honnold didn’t write it himself). If you want to learn more about Alex and his climbing, I would recommend watching the documentary Free Solo instead. That said, it’s a largely celebrated book so who am I to say it doesn’t below on this list? The story seems fairly straightforward in some ways. Young married couple move to America. Husband has an affair with a co-worker. Wife finds out and decides to forgive him...but then organises a road trip to give her errant husband the chance to show he’s changed. Things aren’t going well, and it seems the wife is going to take the opportunity to remove her husband from the situation. But things don’t quite work out like that. The Field Guide to Wilderness Survival by Tom Brown Jr. this survival storybook preserves knowledge that was in danger of being lost forever but reaches even deeper into the past. This is one of those “he did an impressive thing so let’s have him write a book about it”. I wasn’t taken on an emotional rollercoaster; there were no long nights where I couldn’t put the book down. That said, it was interesting learning about what goes into an expedition and how your mindset changes as you navigate an obsession. Or you can discover how B E Jones gained inspiration for the book during her own holiday adventures hiking among majestic mountains and canyons. Standing on the rim of one canyon she began to imagine how someone with murderous intent might act in a moment of madness. I think if I were her partner, I’d be rather nervous what the was thinking of when I was just enjoying the scenery. Wilderness by B E Jones: Footnotes Each way of life brings with it its own beauty and challenge. Most of the time, yes, I am happier, and I have mostly circumvented the stresses of modern life. That said, I’ve acquired a couple of the struggles of ancient life. But I think contentment is something healthier to aim for than happiness. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. It’s one that shouldn’t be missed and the perfect Summer holiday read partly due to the fabulous setting (maybe not the murders!). Speaking of the setting, I loved how the author conveyed the stark contrast between the two locations in the US. You have the wide open space of the national parks versus the built up and somewhat claustrophobic feeling of New York City. It’s all so beautifully written that you can’t help but ‘live’ the locations with the characters. An absolute joy to read! Highly recommended. This is the 22nd book to be added to this list and it’s going in the number one spot. I can’t believe I only learned about this book two weeks ago. It is perhaps the most incredible story I’ve ever read.

Wilderness by B.E. Jones | Goodreads

Despite it being my least favourite, I still think it’s a great read. Adam has incredible determination and courage to face the unknown, on his own, and the book is entertaining. This is a carefully plotted and well-paced novel that has a strong central character. Will the husband and some of the other characters are not as fully formed but they’re there really more as a foil to Liv. She’s the one through whose eyes we witness every situation and development. There’s tension when his climbing partner must decide whether to stay or abandon his partner. You’ll hold your breath as Joe dangles over a crevasse, about to drop. If you have high blood pressure, maybe don’t read this book. But if you love to be kept up at night on the edge of your seat, you’ll love this book. Braving It: A Father, a Daughter, and an Unforgettable Journey into the Alaskan Wild By James CampbellThis disturbing but gripping story unfolds through Liv’s eyes when she finds her dream chance at a new life in New York City shattered by her husband’s affair. Devastated and traumatised, she tries to give him a second chance but can she deal with the betrayal and its aftermath? Jones has an uncanny talent of making the setting become a character in itself. The more devious and darker that Livs character becomes, the setting also becomes more hostile and dangerous. It blends well together, as a reader we don't know wether to worry what Liv will do, or what may accidentally occur out in the wild. In it you will find much that was forgotten, the most ancient and essential skills of humankind, presented in a simple, easy-to-use format with clear instructions. My dear friends, though GPS devices are great, they can break, get lost, or easily be hampered by weather conditions, which makes basic map and compass skills essential for people who love spending time outdoors. I take the axe out of his hand, and see him with his pencil for a moment. Is it simply because he’s a brilliant writer? Maybe, but then again, so was Thoreau. Am I affected by his sincere humility and the calm, understated authority in his writing? Is it because it contains, in my view, the greatest essay ever written, “Thinking Like a Mountain”? Or was it his capacity to draw analogies from nature in a way that has taught me more about my place in the world than any other book? These are all quite plausible explanations, but still I’m not convinced.
