The prayer should, therefore, be used as aspiration units, the several parts of which could become springboards for the individual’s own prayer subjects. Shebna, who apparently had neither, was one of King Hezekiah’s chief assistants and thus too close to the top of the reins of power. Sovereign Grace Music has produced an album of songs inspired by some of the prayers in The Valley of Vision.

They will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, the offspring, and the posterity, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers. The poems express thoughts of praise and thanksgiving, encouragement, comfort, humility and repentance. This “Valley of Vision” Prophecy is a unique prophecy passage that many Bible students probably overlook.

I was given the Valley of Vision by my campus ministry director in college and have grown to love it over the years. You’ve seen me recommend it both for the topic of recommended books on prayer and as a one of the best devotional books.

Bennett's poetic renderings of these prayers are a window into Puritan spirituality and are a tool to deepen our own walk with God. Some use a few phrases from a specific prayer, others develop a particular idea, and a few try to capture the original flow of thought, using many of the original words. The people should have mourned their broken city walls which reflected their broken spiritual condition. The following analysis of the prophecy is partly influenced by this reading of the historical setting, and it is right to say that at one or two points the view adopted is somewhat tentative.

The prayers are short (2 pages apiece in my edition) and one could easily read the entire book in a few days, but there is so much to ponder and meditate on that I limited myself to no more than 6 pages per reading session. Possibly the name became more characteristic from the impulse given to the prophetic dreams of all who claimed to be seers. While the city abandons itself to demonstrations of frantic gaiety, in spite of the disgrace that has overtaken the country, Isaiah shuts himself up in solitary and inconsolable anguish.

You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest, you also saw the damage to the city of David, that it was great, and you gathered together the waters of the lower pool. They are “on the house-tops,” the flat roofs of which were a customary place of concourse ( Judges 16:27; Nehemiah 8:16), keeping their revels, as those do who meet the approach of danger with a reckless despair ( Isaiah 22:13).

Between the Jerusalem mount and the taller mountains to the east, a long deep valley runs south and ends at the Dead Sea region.
