Learn about how the champagne we drink today is owed to British technology for making sparkling wine; rum and India Pale Ale were developed so they could withstand the long, hot journeys to Britain's burgeoning overseas empire; whisky became the drink of choice for weary empire builders far from home; and how without alcohol, the pre-20th century global economy could not function. A generous and wide ranging selection of Keat's works, accompanied by critical notes, a chronology and selection of analytic essays. Think of safe houses as a last resort in case the cops have raided all your breweries and you still need to produce alcohol.

Champagnes, by contrast, more often have German names; the Brits weren’t the only wine entrepreneurs. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. Doing so takes some serious effort and includes understanding all sorts of mechanics, from distilling alcohol and making money to hiring gangsters and hailing taxis. It was designed by Sroop Sunar who has designed covers for Salman Rushdie and Rudyard Kipling so a massive honour to have someone so prestigious. But the one I am going to choose is a little more prosaic but I’ve been thinking about it since January.Following its success, he was made wine columnist for The Lady, as well as a regular contributor to The Spectator, the Guardian and The Oldie on booze and other matters. This was a Christmas gift from a few years ago and I don't know why I put off reading it, it was a fascinating look at the history of certain alcoholic drinks as influenced by Britain (for good or bad). Apparently continental wine merchants meeting together still dress in “le style Anglais” – tweed jackets and mustard-coloured trousers – deriving from that time. I remember going off to one in 2018, and when I told my daughter where I was going she replied: “you’re not still talking about your book are you daddy? For each type of alcoholic beverage examined the author goes into some background of how it got started, how the British influence changed it, and how it all fits into a larger historical context.

I am a great admirer of Henry Jeffreys and have been eagerly awaiting his booze and empire book for many years! Having left publishing with the aim of making a career as an author, I suddenly needed a job so started working for an online whisky retailer. There are a lot of intricacies to the new turn-based strategy game from Romero Games, and it’s tutorial only briefly touches on some of the topics below — for others, it completely skips them! Navigate to your Alcohol Production menu to make sure you are producing enough alcohol for your businesses. For a festive special, Tom and Dominic are joined by author and alcohol historian Henry Jeffreys to discuss some Christmassy tipples, from sherry to port, champagne to clairet.Whenever I see friends, relatives, colleagues and acquaintances, they always ask 'when am I getting my book?

I would definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in how alcohol is made (rather than just an interest in drinking it). It’s taken a long time for me to get over my prejudice against Australian wines but I am now a Rockford convert.During lockdown I switched to online talks, which people paid to attend and was even asked to do a whole lecture series which I didn’t have time to do. Even if you don't like wine, and you don't like reading, you will enjoy reading Henry Jeffreys on wine and other 'tipples'. I really liked the sections "Drinking the Empire" in which he gives suggestions for each of the drinks, especially those he thinks would be most like what used to be drunk at the time.
