This seems further proof that the Snapdragon 695, for all its flaws, is a seriously efficient chipset –having contributed to the Sony Xperia 10 IV’s class-leading stamina. It’s good news for Snapdragon-maker Qualcomm, and non-news for us as battery life is basically not a reason to buy, or not to buy, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo. If you can stretch your budget a little further, the Xiaomi Poco F4 is a better all-rounder, in spite of its slightly shorter battery life. Otherwise, save yourself a few quid and go for the cheaper OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G, which outclasses the Neo in pretty much every way. Overall the Neo isn’t necessarily the most interesting phone on the market, or at the price point, from a design perspective, but it is robust and comfortable to use, both of which are significant strong points. That it has wireless charging too is a nice surprise, as it is something that much of the competition at the price point omits entirely. Moving on to more demanding tasks such as gaming, and the situation understandably changes somewhat. Titles such as PUBG run slowly and will need to be run at lower resolutions, if therefore you are someone who places a lot of emphasis on mobile gaming you’d be best to look elsewhere. The Motorola Edge 30 Neo’s Auto HDR is powerful and mostly reliable, meaning you can shoot pretty carelessly even directly into the sun. Having said that, there is a problem somewhat related to this area.

It is inevitable – with a smaller body comes a smaller battery, and of course a trade-off in battery life.

Chipset: Qualcomm SM6375 Snapdragon 695 5G (6 nm): Octa-core (2x2.2 GHz Kryo 660 Gold & 6x1.7 GHz Kryo 660 Silver); Adreno 619.Spec-wise the display is otherwise pretty normal. It’s a 1080 x 2400 pixel 120Hz panel with two color modes, Natural and Saturated. They perform just as their names suggest. Rear camera: Wide (main): 64 MP, f/1.8, 0.7µm, PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 13 MP, f/2.2, 120˚, 1.12µm, AF.

As is ever the case, given that it is a phone from Motorola, the Neo comes running the ‘Moto Experience’. This is the manufacturer’s attempt to give the base Android experience a little favour and improve its usability in many situations. The Motorola Edge 30 Neo has a 4,020mAh battery, which a worryingly small capacity. That’s lower than the Pixel 6a’s 4,410mAh, and dramatically lower than the Sony Xperia 10 IV’s 5,000mAh. Once depleted, the 68W fast charger can take the battery to 50% in around 12 minutes, and on to full in less than 40 minutes. This is pretty much identical to both the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G and the Xiaomi Poco F4, and just a hair faster than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11. While direct light yields decent results, step into the darkness and it’s a different story. The colour representation and detail drops substantially, and while the final image isn’t particularly bad, it’s not the best you can get for this price. There’s a 64MP primary camera with OIS (optical image stabilization), and a 13MP ultra-wide. Both are technically above average, thanks to the use of OIS, and a higher-res, larger sensor ultra-wide than plenty of affordable mid-tier Androids. The Motorola Edge 30 lineup came in two parts this year. From March through May, the company introduced the vanilla Edge 30 and Edge 30 Pro, whereas the Edge 30 Neo, Fusion, and Ultra arrived in the second half of the year with slightly different designs and brought a bit more to the table. Though it may be smaller, and cheaper, than its kin, it has a 1080p OLED display, a 50MP camera, a powerful processor and an interesting design to boot – so it is hardly a poor cousin. This said, at the price of entry it finds itself up against a host of powerful players, each offering options that blend a similar set of specs, though all of them are larger. Grass looks roughly as it does to your eyes, and in most shots the sky will look natural too. The phone does at times leave stills with a slight magenta cast, but it’s not immediately obvious. The hardware situation improves in the camera, at least superficially. Motorola only put two cameras on the Edge 30 Neo, but that simply means we miss out on the poor depth or macro sensors commonly seen in this price category.

The unimpressive performance and middling camera suite paired with the prospect of limited updates really weigh the Neo down, to a point where it’s impossible to recommend it over other handsets in this price range. Best Cases For Motorola Edge 30 Neo&url=https://wonderfulengineering.com/10-best-cases-for-motorola-edge-30-neo/" class="popup"> This is helped along by an effective HDR mode, which you can see in the image below adding greater contrast to the branches and hedgerows without washing out the cloudy sky. It does, however, come at the expense of definition in the finer details of the leaves, with the colours somewhat smudging together. These bumper shell cases are a perfect fit for Motorola Edge 30 Neo body. It covers all directions with its TPU and silicone material for easy installation and removal. These cases have precise cutouts for buttons, speakers, and ports. This wouldn’t matter so much if we were just making a comparison between the Neo and the Fusion, but you can get Fusion-like results from phones such as the OnePlus Nord 2T and the Pixel 6a.Across several days of real-world usage, a second picture appears. This is a phone that won’t win any endurance competitions, but one which proves to be entirely adequate for everyday needs. That is to say, it will last a full day in most use cases for many people, but it doesn’t have the capability to make it through to a second day. Battery life, at least, sees the Edge 30 Neo put in a good performance, lasting over 21 hours in our video rundown test. The Nord CE 2 5G continues to outshine the competition, reaching beyond 24 hours, but neither of the Xiaomi models made it over 20 hours, so the Neo is still sitting pretty here.
