Description
The production of this album has gone down in music history as one of the toughest and most frought recordings ever. Anderson and Butler were pretty much at a knife edge with each other. Bulter wanted the album to sound one way and Anderson wanted the album to sound another. They clashed to the point when Butler was fired or quit, depends on what story you believe. Anderson and Bulter as much as they hated each other at that point, really needed each other. They both worked off each other brilliantly but each others egos would not take it. Anderson hated Butler's showing off with his guitar skills and Butler hated Anderson's lyrics. Both have different views on this album. Anderson thinks its brilliant while Butler thinks its very flawed and could of been better if he would of produced it his way.

[16] Eventually, the band settled on a photo lifted from one of Anderson's old photo books, featuring a naked man sprawled on a bed. The photo was taken from a 1972 book called Frontiers Of Photography. [63] Taken by American photographer Joanne Leonard in 1971, the front cover picture was originally titled "Sad Dreams on Cold Mornings" and the rear photo "Lost Dreams". [61] Anderson says, "I just liked the image, really, of the bloke on the bed in the room. It's quite sort of sad and sexual, I think, like the songs on the album." [64] Release and promotion [ edit ] Before we look at Dog Man Star, it’s important to note Stay Together, the standalone single Suede released between their first two albums. Stay Together came out on 14 February 1994 and was a hugely surprising release that clearly marked where the band was heading. The full version of the song is 8 minutes plus beasts that twists, turns and pouts, highlighting a sound that has obviously progressed from the Suede album era. As good as Stay Together is, however, its’ two b-sides are the real stars here and are songs that would have not sounded out of place at all on Dog Man Star. Musical differences arose over "The Asphalt World". The final version on the album has a duration of 9:25, edited from a much longer recording. According to bass player Mat Osman, Butler's initial creation was a 25-minute piece with an eight-minute guitar solo. [19] However, according to Anderson, the composition was 18 minutes long, and was a pre-production recording featuring only guitar and drums, that was intended to be edited down.

Suede’s sound has been compared to that of the Smiths as well as David Bowie, with many critics drawing attention to Brett Anderson’s dark and bleak depictions of British society. Bernard Butler’s guitar work also earned praise from critics, and the album has since gained a reputation as not only Suede’s best album (usually competing with their next, Dog Man Star) but also as one of the greatest records of the Britpop era. As recorded with Butler, " The Wild Ones" originally featured a four-minute extended coda. This was cut from the final version and the ending reworked. Extended mixes of both this and The Asphalt World, restoring cut sections of the original recordings, were eventually released on the 2011 expanded edition.
The easiest thing to do when reviewing an album is to call the subject of your piece “A classic” or “A landmark” and all those other easy to trot out inanities. The fact is, very few albums are classic albums and even that depends on who is defining classic. There are many good and indeed very good albums of course, but few albums are complete works from beginning to end, ebbing and flowing perfectly, balancing light and shade and capturing your attention throughout. Review Summary: Wondrously and agonizingly lovelorn; 'The Asphalt World' alone justifies the price of admission. a b Barber, Nicholas (9 October 1994). "Arts / Records – Suede: Dog Man Star". The Independent . Retrieved 25 May 2013.This distinction is both logical and illogical. Yes, it’s neat and tidy, but that doesn’t reflect the actual history. Together was after all promoted as a double ‘A’ side with New Generation, a DOG MAN STAR single. The twelve-inch and CD single also contained Bentswood Boys. Both of these were written by Brett Anderson and new guitarist Richard Oakes and both are missing from this set (as they were from the 2011 reissue). The fact is that the Dog Man Star era didn’t end with a clean straight line – there was a messy overlap with Oakes appearing on singles and of course performing on the Dog Man Star tour of 1994/5. In trying to tidy up the messiness of the division between Dog Man Star/Bernard Butler and Coming Up/Richard Oakes Suede and Edsel have created an imperfect and not a not really comprehensive summation of the Dog Man Star era. If you wanted to be provocative you could say they are guilty of rewriting history.
