While the front touch display is cramped at 1.4 inches, the main screen is much more spacious, measuring 2.25 inches. With both screens sporting a pixel density of 326PPI, they're plenty sharp, and they also get nice and bright for easy outdoor viewing. I enjoyed using the DJI OSMO Action 3. To be 100 per cent honest, I usually prefer shooting action videos using 360° cameras such as the Insta360 X3 because I don't have to shoot footage twice in different orientations, but thanks to the magnetic mounting of the OSMO Action 3, it was less effort to switch from horizontal to vertical shooting than using a GoPro.
Despite these limitations, however, I found performance to be pretty impressive. The camera’s image stabilisation ensured footage remained smooth, even while the camera was shaking around quite violently, and the horizon levelling was effective, keeping video dead level. The DJI Osmo Action 3 has a few things going for it that competing GoPro Hero cameras don't match, including the front touch LCD, a 52-foot waterproof rating, and easy-on-easy-off mounting system. Battery life is another strong point, with good runtimes, a resistance to overheating, and a sensible charging case accessory as marks in its favor. Tested in a 25° C (77° F) laboratory environment while using the DJI 30W USB-C Charger with the photo taking/video recording function disabled and the screens off. Should be used for reference only. Coming to the imaging system, the camera comes with a 1/1.7-inch sensor that shoots in 4K/120fps and provides a 155-degree super-wide FOV. In addition, D-Cinelike color mode is available in video, slow-motion, and timelapse modes for those looking for more room to edit in post-production. The first Osmo Action brought a color screen to the front of the action camera, a move that GoPro later copied. Now DJI has upped the ante again by adding a touchscreen to the front of the Osmo Action 3, allowing you to not only frame shots, but also control the camera as well. Using your fingers to control a tiny screen might sound cramped, but it works surprisingly well. I had no trouble adjusting basic settings like mode and shooting resolution. It's built to handle cold weather, so you can keep recording for up to 150 minutes in temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F)
More significant is the time the 1770mAh battery can offer and that is impressive. DJI say it can operate for as long as 160 minutes, and in our testing we got it to past 120 with the front screen on. That comfortably eclipses the Action 2 and the GoPro Hero10.Osmo Action 3 charges from 0-80% in as little as 18 minutes and 0-100% in 50 minutes. This native fast-charging support is a first for action cameras. It’s also worth highlighting that an improved heat management system enables continuous 4K/60fps recording until the battery runs out of power. Imaging system with D-Cinelike color mode Where the DJI Action 2 dropped the ball was heat management. Its small body and exposed metal design resulted in uncomfortably hot temperatures after even short bouts of recording high-resolution content. This time, though, DJI has improved things significantly. For vloggers and live streamers, a three-mic stereo recording system reduces wind noise and boosts the audio quality of the footage. Wi-Fi livestream supports 1080p/30fps, 720p/30fps and 480p/30fps, and pausing recording during the stream. UAC/UVC Webcam support offers high-quality video and audio for conference calls and livestreams.
