And if you like any of those things, or all of those things, or several of them or none of them, or if you find any of them exciting, or compelling, or curiosity-inducing at all, then you simply have to read it. The rest, as they say, is history. “As you wish...” As always, I am ABSOLUTELY in love with this book.

The Princess Bride: Full Book Summary | SparkNotes

In the case of The Princess Bride, the movie is clearly superior to me, if only because I fell in love with it first. It is impossible, at this point, to absorb Goldman’s lines without hearing them read aloud by Mandy Patinkin or Wallace Shawn. Relish the thrilling horror of Frankenstein in Folio’s stunning new edition. Mary Shelley's darkly disturbing tale is illustrated by Angela Barrett and newly introduced by Richard Holmes. The epilogue to some later editions of the novel, notably the 25th anniversary edition, mentions a sequel, Buttercup's Baby, that was "having trouble getting published because of legal difficulties with S. Morgenstern's estate". This sequel seems to be just as fictional as S. Morgenstern's unabridged edition, though later editions actually reprint Goldman's "sample chapter".

To wrap up, I must say that I was left a bit deflated by The Princess Bride. It has a little zing, a little sappy romance, and a little adventure, but overall, I think I approached it about 15 years too late. Had I read it when I was 10, I'm sure it would still to this day be one of my favorites. One of the great nothing-arguments of our time on earth is the debate over which is better: the book or the movie. It’s a wholly subjective query that is treated in an entirely objective manner, as though it’s a mathematical equation with a single right answer. People get really heated about it. Ah, and I see God is agreeing with me! I have just looked out of our great scenic window, and the most BEAUTIFUL rainbow has just appeared. Goldman's writing style for this novel works so surprisingly well. For one, it's such an unusual idea to write a retelling of a story by a fictional author - Goldman claims his father read him the S. Morgenstern classic as a child and then proceeds to tell us the "abridged" version with all the good parts. It's strange how well his constant sidenotes actually add to the story, rather than take us out of it. I think maybe it's the little kids inside most readers who remember the magic of being read a story as a child. Because while this is a fantasy story with magic and princesses, it's also a bittersweet tale about how a father introduced his son to the world of stories. The story begins with Buttercup, one of the world’s most beautiful women. She lives on a farm with her parents and Westley, their farm hand. One day a band of Florinese royalty appear on the farm, and while watching them watch Westley, she falls in love with him. He leaves to America to seek his fortune soon after that encounter. Soon he’s reported as dead by Count Rugen (the Dread Pirate Roberts). Buttercup is broken-hearted and vows never to fall in love again for fear of being hurt like this. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”Essentially, it's suffice to know that the Princess Bride is based on a longer story that Goldman edited down into a more manageable book.
