Description

Cable twisting length is not standardized, but typically there are 1.5-2 twists per cm in Cat-5(e) and 2+ twists per cm in Cat-6. Within a single cable, each colored pair will also have different twist lengths based on prime numbers so that no two twists ever align. The amount of twists per pair is usually unique for each cable manufacturer. As you can see in the above picture, no two pairs have the same amount of twists per inch. Cat5 and Cat5e are two common classifications of Ethernet or network cabling. The Cat5e specification came into widespread use after 2001, before which Cat5 had been the latest standard. ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-2001, Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standard" (PDF). p.6 ¶4.3.2. The maximum length for a cable segment is 100 meters (330ft) per TIA/EIA 568-5-A. [31] If longer runs are required, the use of active hardware such as a repeater or switch is necessary. [32] [33] The specifications for 10BASE-T networking specify a 100-meter length between active devices. [34] This allows for 90 meters of solid-core permanent wiring, two connectors and two stranded patch cables of 5 meters, one at each end. [35] Conductors [ edit ]

The Category5e specification improves upon the Category5 specification by further mitigating crosstalk. [9] The bandwidth (100MHz) and physical construction are the same between the two, [10] and most Cat 5 cables actually happen to meet Cat 5e specifications even though they are not certified as such. [11] Category5 was deprecated in 2001 and superseded by the Category5e specification. [12] It has been suggested that this section should be split into a new article titled Twisted pair, because Applies not only Cat 5, but to all communication cabling. ( discuss) ( June 2023)As with all Ethernet and network cables, Cat5 cables (including Cat5e) typically use the RJ45 connector standard.

Stranded conductor (stranded core) Cat5/Cat5e Ethernet cable tends to be used for establishing shorter runs between temporary or easily movable wired networks. Small office networks, such as those linking computers to a router via a short Cat5e patch cable or similar will generally be fine using stranded Ethernet wiring. Most standard Ethernet patch cables at lengths of 50 feet or less will tend to have stranded conductors. Cat5 stands for Category 5 cable, while Cat5e stands for Category 5 Enhanced (or Enhanced Category 5). Cat5e specs offer a significant upgrade in terms of general performance and faster data transfer speeds than the earlier Cat5 versions. Compared to the CAT5 and CAT5e ethernet cables, the CAT6 cable offers dramatically higher speeds and a more stable, uninterrupted connection.F/FTP (Foil/Foil Twisted Pair): Both the individual twisted pairs and the cable have an added layer of foil shielding around them Ethernet Cable Identification and Use". Donutey. Archived from the original on 2011-07-10 . Retrieved 2011-04-01. Category5 cable ( Cat5) is a twisted pair cable for computer networks. Since 2001, the variant commonly in use is the Category5e specification ( Cat5e). The cable standard provides performance of up to 100MHz and is suitable for most varieties of Ethernet over twisted pair up to 2.5GBASE-T [1] [2] [3] [4] but more commonly runs at 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet) speeds. Cat5 is also used to carry other signals such as telephone and video.
