About this deal

Spread baking soda across a tray (we used a cookie sheet). Pour drops of food coloring and soap around the tray. Don’t worry about mixing it up. Let your child squirt lemon juice drops onto the baking soda. The bottled kind of lemon juice works well for this. The citric acid of the lemon juice will react with the baking soda creating carbon dioxide. The soap will trap the gas causing more fizz! Playdough Volcano

Extend the first experiment by having students design their own experiments to determine how different factors affect the production of carbon dioxide gas. Variables to be altered could be:Watch a chemical reaction in slow motion as copper sulphate and ammonia react, resulting in colour change and precipitation. The pale blue solid we’re left with is a mixture of copper hydroxide and copper sulphate. Just be careful when handling these chemicals as both can be harmful if inhaled or touched. 7. Reaction Between Iodine and Zinc, koen2all

First, combine your base ingredients by putting the water inside of the plastic cup and filling it about 2/3 full.Recommendation: These experiments will cause spillage. If possible, use an outdoor space for these experiments; they can be messy. Otherwise, prepare your space for spills and clean ups. The explosive decomposition of energetic compounds can be triggered by heat, mechanical stress, light, catalysts (e.g., metals), or sparks. The sensitivity to each factor varies with the compound. Often, the stability of a compound decreases with increasing concentration, and the pure or dry compound is the most sensitive to decomposition. Scale of the experiment Fill the trough with water and clamp the bottle in position with its bottom well below the water level. Place a safety screen between the bottle and the class, who should be at least 2 m away. Provide protection for the demonstrator with a second screen. In this experiment, students observe what happens when cornflour is sprayed into the flame of a candle burning inside a large tin can with the lid on. The resulting small explosion caused by rapid combustion of the cornflour blows the lid off the tin. Erupting potions in a test tube or beaker made with baking soda and vinegar is always fun! We like to make witchy potions for Halloween, love potions for Valentine’s Day and fairy potions for any time of year. baking soda and vinegar potions Splatter patterns

If any compound in your experiment contain a hazardous bond and does NOT obey the “Rule of Six,” it may be explosive. Follow the safety recommendations outlined below: Is there an alternate compound or route to produce the same end result? It’s also a great way to learn about the scientific method that they’ll use throughout their schooling and perhaps their whole life. The oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense (lighter) than water. The food coloring has the same density as the water so it sinks through the oil and mixes with the water. As the baking soda dissolves in the vinegar it creates a gas called carbon dioxide. If diazomethane cannot be substituted, specialized distillation equipment with flame-polished joints is commercially available. CatalystsNew Year’s or July Fourth: time for parties and chemistry. In this video, Bassam Shakhashiri, chemistry professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, explains some of the science of fireworks. This lesson plan was created by the New York Hall of Science in collaboration with Science Friday as part of Teachers Talking Science, an online resource for teachers, homeschoolers, and parents to produce free materials based on very popular SciFri Videos to help in the classroom or around the kitchen table.
