Description

An enjoyable rhyming book with wholesome illustrations, Not That Pet! is perfect for young families considering bring an animal into their lives, and a lovely story about an everyday family and their dynamics. The Book with No Pictures” is a creative and uniquely stylized book targeting children up to about age 7 (per the author and publishers). In a sense, the book has no plot and is simply colored words and phrases (literally and figuratively) but will induce laughter in children with their nonsensical meanings. “The Book with No Pictures” is set-up so that adults read the humorous words but then also a parental side dialogue. One may think that young children are not interested in reading a book without pictures but think again: they love it! I like the idea that this might be the first book-without-pictures that some children experience, and that it could open their eyes and inspire them to wonder what might be in all those other books without pictures.

Actor Novak’s expert sense of comic timing is on full display in his first picture book . . . sure to deliver big laughs.”— P ublishers Weekly Kids & Children» Children, Teenagers & Young Adults (YA) Fiction» General, Modern & Contemporary Fiction for Children & Teenagers This book has no pictures. At first children might think this will be boring, until they discover that the book is going to force the adult reading it to say all sorts of ridiculous things. Simple, large type may help younger kids read or identify some words. Kids can contemplate whether a made-up word such as "BLUURFF" has any meaning. Kids may be inspired to make up their own words and sounds or write a story with made-up words and silly directions that a parent must read. Watch this video of the author reading the book. Can you create your own promotional video or a retelling of the book?

El: I thought it was so good, and so funny! *El has just listed off about a dozen things starting with, "I liked it when... and I liked it when..." But I can't even begin to keep up... she's STILL listing things. ...Still going... This innovative and wildly funny read-aloud by award-winning humorist/actor B.J. Novak will turn any reader into a comedian. B.j. Novak (1979–) is well known for his work on NBC's Emmy Award-winning comedy series 'The Office' as a writer, actor, director, and executive producer. He is also acclaimed for his stand-up comedy, his performances in motion pictures, and is collection of short stories, 'One More Thing' (2014). B.J. has brown hair and blue eyes. There are pictures of him, but not in this book. but don't shout, i know this is an option, not a replacement for books with pictures. and i still understand and appreciate what he's trying to do here.

Say what we will, but the truth of the matter is that there are a lot of people, not just kids, who run screaming from any and every book that is word-heavy. For years, book snobs have, whether admitting it or not, equated someone's literacy skills based on whether they choose books with illustrations. It's been a running joke for years. The beauty of this book is that it reminds(not really teaches) us that we can create the pictures in our own minds and that there is power in the written word. I just read this with Busy Phillips doing expert narration. The other choice was the author, which I'm going to choose next, because I can. Overdrive has offered me both. Some of the words in the story have been made up. Could you make up some new nonsense words and use these as part of your own writing? Could you create a nonsense poem?Dad: I think that's what the book was trying to do. To make it look like I didn't want to read the book... But did I want to read the book? Use of "butt " as part of a silly name for a hippo. One mention of "Ba-DOONGY FACE," but it's not directed at anyone. It’s not that BJ Novak is aiming for the lowest common denominator. The book features made-up words (“BLORK … BLUURF”), humiliation (“I am a monkey who taught myself to read”), manipulation (“the kid I am reading this to is THE BEST KID IN THE HISTORY OF THIS WORLD”) and general silliness. Interesting idea though it is, however, The Book With No Pictures left me feeling a little empty.
