Description

In 1994 Ibou organized the first World Symbols Festival in Ostend followed by many others in countries such as China, Korea, Japan, Poland, Mexico, Brazil, Czech Republic,… The festivals were fully devoted to the logo as a symbol represented by and with the presence of leading designers. Brand New®, is a division of UnderConsideration, displaying opinions, and focusing solely, on corporate and brand identity work.

Because it was devised for writing Latin rather than English, the Roman alphabet was not a perfect fit for the Old English sound system. With Letters As Symbols, we did not want to make a distinction between famous and non-famous designers. The original idea for the book first came to light in 1991 thanks to Belgian design legend Paul Ibou who has not really been given the recognition he truly deserves.Having different fonts Instagram bios has become fairly popular recently, so it might be worth jumping on that trend. UnderConsideration is a graphic design firm generating its own projects, initiatives, and content while taking on limited client work. Latin had no 'th' sound and consequently no letter to represent it; to fill this gap the Anglo Saxons imported the letter 'thorn,' 'þ', from the runic alphabet.

The Unicode values of the characters in the tables below, except those shown with pink backgrounds or index values of '–', are obtained by adding the base values from the "U+" header row to the index values in the left column (both values are hexadecimal). Small details include the repurposing of the “Famous Animal Logos” form by Rolf Harder for his submission to Letters As Symbols, the provocation to discover the colour values provided by Félix Beltrán and the idiosyncrasies of each designer’s handwriting. This LogoArchive ExtraIssue offers readers a sample of Letters As Symbols and tells its story through selected logos and archival documents. He adds: "Looking purely at the aesthetics of the featured logos, they are all equal and have the qualities a good logo must have. One of those projects is Letters As Symbols, a logo book showing work that is based on one individual letter of the alphabet (from A to Z). The book features more than 400 logos, 75 corporate identities, 120 books and catalogs, 250 posters and 350 packages. There are a number of Letters As Symbols in the book from international countries, Belgium has been the obvious spotlight with 75 in total and the majority been designed by Paul Ibou himself.

These are often short pieces; never complete proposals or those that seek the dogmatic, but intend to provoke thought. During his career, Paul Ibou collected an unseen archive of logos from the most famous and renowed designers of that time such as: Saul Bass, Félix Beltrán, Burton Kramer, Yasaburo Kuwayama, Eduardo A. Because letters work at the phonemic level and are unencumbered by any extra baggage of sound, they achieve maximum efficiency. The Unicode values of the characters in the tables below, except those shown with yellow backgrounds or index values of '–', are obtained by adding the base values from the "U+" header row to the index values in the left column (both values are hexadecimal). Our six letters of 'pencil' can easily be broken out and rearranged within countless other words--'lien,' 'Nile,' 'stipend,' 'clip,'--that sound nothing like 'pencil.

Ibou received numerous awards and worldwide recognition in specialized press, leading design books and magazines. This sits alongside an anthropological text; a musing on the distinctive qualities of the human eye. The cover is the first element of the book you visually engage with, and i must say that a very good job has been done to the cover design. In addition, the iconic booklet of LogoArchive becomes a bright yellow folder to hold examples of the original Letters As Symbols submission forms received in 1991 from well-respected designers such as Félix Beltrán, Woody Pirtle and Rolf Harder. Letters As Symbols, launched on Kickstarter, is based on Belgian graphic design pioneer Paul Ibou's collection of an unseen archive of logos designed by the leading designers of the 60s until the 80s.But runic writing had only a limited use in Britain; the conversion to Christianity brought with it the Roman alphabet, which was established as the principal medium for Old English written records. The styled characters are mostly located in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, but the 24 characters in cells with a pink background are located in the letterlike symbols block, for example, ℛ ( script capital r) is at U+211B rather than the expected U+1D4AD which is reserved. In its new format, the book gathers Ibou’s original archive materials with more contemporary work; offering a broad selection of beautiful logo design and lettering that’s likely to prove an inspiration for designers, artists, agencies, teachers, typographers, students, and pretty much anyone interested in logo design, typography and letterforms.
