About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Though, unlike previous books where I only worked it out at the last moment, this time I honed in on the culprit straight away.

This is a story about deception, about detective work, the importance of learning other languages, about friendship and family, about secrets and codes, and most importantly about trains. Harrison Beck undertakes another locomotive mystery in the fourth instalment of Leonard and Sedgman’s thrilling Adventures on Trains series, as a cursed family of railway tycoons high in the German mountains makes for a sinister supernatural mystery. As with the previous novels the characters are well developed and the plot moves along at a good, convincing pace. Read an extract from the book here, or downl oad our questions to use for discussion in your own book club. With a cast of delightfully dubious characters who are all potential suspects, Kidnap on the California Comet will keep readers guessing and reading on to enjoy the developing friendships and follow the red herrings across the USA, to a satisfying conclusion.

This adventure seems a little more serious to Hal, and it doesn’t help that Uncle Nat is behaving oddly too! Even though all of the books in the series have the same main characters and themes, they are all different enough to make them each an enjoyable read on their own. Reminiscent of The Hound of the Baskervilles, this time Hal and Uncle Nat go undercover in the German mountains to investigate a deadly curse.I liked all the characters, warmed to them all very quickly and enjoyed the bonds of friendship that formed between them. I particularly liked the inclusion of some new background on Uncle Nat that should make for some interesting plot developments going forward and keep the series fresh. Fans of Agatha Christie, or, more recently, Robin Stevens and Katherine Woodfine, should adore this mystery which makes a steam trail all of its own. From a creaking old house at the foot of the Harz mountains, they take the Kratzenstein family's funeral train to the peak of the Brocken Mountain.

After the mysterious death of a family member, Uncle Nat and Hal are asked to travel to the funeral to investigate the death and an ominous witch's curse.

She works as a freelance Digital Media Producer for clients such as the National Theatre, and Harry Potter West End, and previously worked as a Senior Digital Producer at the National Theatre, the Royal Opera House and Shakespeare’s Globe. There's always an ensemble of distinct characters in these stories and it takes time to get to know them all, but here even by the end we weren't 100% clear on who was who and what their relationships were. Join Hal and Uncle Nat on more stops in this thrilling series with: The Highland Falcon Thief, Kidnap on the California Comet, Murder on the Safari Star and Sabotage on the Solar Express. She has a first-class honours degree in English literature and an MA in Shakespeare Studies from Kings College London. There's a family which is out of the ordinary - the Kratzensteins to get to know, including working out their curse, which sends readers on a thrilling action-packed mystery to get their teeth into and solve.

The mysteries don't stop there, with such sensational intrigue at a creaky house, that has just the right amount of spookiness, with its private train line. I did miss being on the train the whole time, I feel like that always adds a nice closed circle, or even locked room element, to the mystery. De vertaling is ook nu weer van Anne Douqué, en die heeft zich ook weer goed van haar werk gekweten.I was absolutely delighted to be accepted on Net Galley to read and review this title; I am a huge fan of the ‘Adventures on Trains’ series and have loved the first 3 stories. Join Hal and Uncle Nat on more stops in this thrilling series with: The Highland Falcon Thief , Kidnap on the California Comet , Murder on the Safari Star and Sabotage on the Solar Express. I honestly can not believe that an installment in this series actually got less than 4 stars and that makes me so sad. She spent her early career in the music industry running Setanta Records, an independent record label, and managing bands, most notably The Divine Comedy.
