There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used. Huawei’s panel has wireless and Bluetooth connectivity, which delivers handy new functionality. If you’ve got a Huawei smartphone you can mirror its screen on the display using NFC wireless projection. You can wirelessly project your PC’s display to the screen, albeit at lesser resolutions than the panel’s huge native figure. You can connect a keyboard and mouse with Bluetooth and use those to control your PC or laptop, and you can link more Huawei devices together using HarmonyOS.

The 5W speakers are only mediocre, too: muddy and underwhelming. They’re fine for casual YouTube viewing and video calls, but that’s it. At least the MateView has dual microphones. On the topic of panel performance, I should mention that the MateView GT can exhibit a bit of ghosting in fast-moving sequences, such as in a frantic firefight with multiple enemies. Engaging the maximum overdrive setting helps but that, in turn, produces a bit of inverse ghosting, so you’ll have to settle for one or the other.

The MateView GT looks stylish compared to some gaming monitors that scream gamer with RGB lights and red accents everywhere. This isn’t to say there are no RGB lights, in fact, there's an ingenious 180cm light strip that runs along the middle of the 340cm long soundbar. The light show can be turned on or off if you don’t like it in the display software (OSD). These monitors are larger and pricier than the Huawei, granted, but another, less expensive favorite, the 2,560x1,440 Razer Raptor 27, covers 162% of the sRGB gamut, and the 32-inch Corsair Xeneon 32QHD165 does even more (194%), though neither monitor gets as bright as the others. Huawei MateView GT review: Performance The Huawei has good colours. The Delta E of 1.41 is below the point where human eyes will detect deviations, and the colour temperature of 6318K is excellent. Huawei’s screen rendered 99.2% of the sRGB gamut at 122.7% volume, which means bold, bright colours in mainstream games, and it also displayed 86.9% of the DCI-P3 gamut. That’s a little below Huawei’s claimed 90% figure, but this is not a bad bill of health – only the Cooler Master did better with gamuts, and the Huawei beats both rivals on accuracy. With two 5w speakers, the soundbar is a handy addition and definitely better than standard monitor speakers but it won’t replace the sound quality or oomph of dedicated speakers. I do love the way you can adjust the sound volume by sliding your finger along the light stripe. Very cool Huawei. It’s a solid panel elsewhere. The stand is a solid slab of metal, the bezels are slim, and build quality is impressive. The MateView is easy to assemble, and it has 110mm of height adjustment and 25-degree of tilt movement. It supports 100mm VESA mounting, too, although doing this will mean you can’t use the soundbar. There’s no swivel movement, either – something which both competitors include. The stand also has no cable-tidying loops or cavities.

The Huawei MateView GT is a 34-inch widescreen panel with an aspect ratio of 21:9. It’s a great place to start: the extra width makes games more immersive, with racing, shooter, flight sims and adventure titles, in particular, benefiting from the extra horizontal space.The flip side of this is that even if you like a lot of what it does, its shortage of aggressive aesthetics and flawless follow-through for everything it attempts may prevent it from being ideal for your gaming setup, even if it is one of the best gaming monitors for some shoppers. But if you need what it has — and if you’re somewhere where you’re able to get your hands on it — it’s worth a look. Huawei MateView GT review: Pricing and availability While I loved my time with the Huawei MateView GT I don’t think it’s for everyone. Some will not like the 1500R curve for standard PC work while others won’t like the space the soundbar takes up on a desk but this can, of course, be negated by using a monitor arm. However, if you need a colour accurate monitor with all that extra screen real estate during the day and like to game at night, it’s hard to look past the MateView GT. While its price tag may seem high to some, when you take into account the high specs and impressive features it’s money well spent.

It does make sense, though: the gaming market is booming, Huawei already makes displays, and the company has ambitions beyond smartphones and laptops. The response time is respectable at 4ms but I did notice the slight difference between 4ms and 1ms on my one gaming monitor in some fast-paced FPS games. There’s the 3:2 aspect ratio, for starters, and the 4K-busting resolution – and the Huawei MateView also includes wireless display projection and big claims about its DCI-P3 performance. And, for all the MateView’s great looks, don’t expect much adjustment. The Huawei has a middling 110mm of height adjustment and it can tilt, but it has no swivelling, no portrait mode ability and no VESA compatibility.

Colour accuracy is excellent too with good contrast, as you’d expect from a VA panel. However, viewing angles are not as good as you’ll see on an IPS display but they’re not terrible here either. After a full calibration using my SpyderX Elite colourimeter I was easily able to produce prints that looked identical to what I was seeing on the monitor.
