When they first came out I would have loved to. When I heard about them I was like, 'Oh, my God, what a great design job.' When I was asked to do this I was like, 'Wow!' But in saying that, I am glad I am doing this instead of that. It’s a different thing, a different opportunity and a very dramatic story, but it's still great to be part of the Harry Potter group. I think doing all of them for ever would be almost too much." This is also the first Fantastic Beasts movie where Rowling is sharing screenplay credit, with Steve Kloves, the man who adapted all but one of the Harry Potter movies. It feels like another act of trying to salvage this franchise. I've read plenty of critics claiming that this movie corrects the screenwriting miscues of the past films, and to this I do not agree. Reaching out for help from an industry veteran used to adapting Rowling's imagination is a smart move, but the movie still suffers like the previous Fantastic Beast movie from a plot overburdened with incident and less on substance, willfully obtuse and convoluted in its plotting. Since Grindelwald gains the power to see into the future, a power that is woefully underutilized, the only way to disguise Dumbledore's plot to uncover election fraud is through sheer confusion. They have to make things purposely confusing and hard to follow on purpose, dear reader. A purposely convoluted and confusing movie is the only way they can beat the bad guy. It's like Kloves is speaking directly to the audience and admitting defeat at keeping anything clear. I went to brush up by reading the Wikipedia summary for this review and even that made me tired. A wizard heist is a great setup, but Secrets of Dumbledore cannot live up to that potential. The set pieces don't lean into what a wizard heist could bestow. There's one memorable sequence where Newt and his brother must escape from a crustacean prison by literal crab-walking. It's the only light in an otherwise dismal, overwhelmingly grey movie. It all feels less transporting and more plodding. Colleen Atwood has designed costumes for films set in the 1920s ( Chicago) and in faraway fantasy worlds ( Alice in Wonderland, Into the Woods). So when the three-time Oscar winner was hired to costume J.K. Rowling’s new universe, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, she was able to merge areas of sartorial expertise—creating period-correct 1920s wardrobes, but with whimsical touches for the wizards wearing them. Early in his career he helped dress Peter Gilmore, complete with his waistcoats and magnificent sideburns, in the BBC’s seafaring saga The Onedin Line. More recently, he has worked on Tom Hardy’s Taboo – and clearly relished both experiences in the same way. “I love doing rough stuff, I love doing Victorian… really rough characters,” he enthuses. If it's a big film, like the Fantastic Beasts series, we will make the costumes for the principal characters and the featured characters (like aurors) and then rent some of the costumes for extras from different costume houses around the world. A character may also have a stunt double and a photo double so you need more versions of costumes than you might think! What have you worked on?

I sort of did the same thing with the enforcers, with their leather coats. They’re based on the period, but they have a lot more swing to them, and they could almost be now, or they’re almost kind of futuristic, but they still have the ‘20s vibe to them, and they’re patterned off a real coat that I found. When you make that style in a different material, like leather, it kind of transforms it into something else. a b Nordyke, Kimberly (24 January 2017). It was a huge period for hats, because the women wore cloches, and the men wore the high crown fedora style hats, and they also wore Homburgs, and all classes of people wore different kinds of hats, traditionally. From the start, we give a nod to the Dumbledores of the Potter movies [played by Richard Harris and then Michael Gambon]. He was in those grayish, mauve-y colors that were his robes. And I wanted to not put him in the same color but have it be reminiscent that it could evolve into that. So, I used a really soft dove gray color.

She is thoughtful of others, as we saw when she first met Jacob Kowalski, but she is also incredibly caring and loyal to those who she loves. Let’s hope that she is able to continue loving Jacob in future films. It’s funny. It was a funny show, in the sense that I find these weird things in my journeys for different jobs. Sometimes, they sit in my storage room for a very long time, and then all of a sudden, they have a place. I had this piece that was actually based on an Indonesian wedding crown, and I disassembled it and reassembled it in a different formation, but the elements in her crown were all disassembled from that.
