Description

of the vast loose gang of strivers and winners and losers which seems to be the very pep of New York.

Almost in spite of itself, the overall tone of the book is one of poetry and possibility in a large ever-changing metropolis. Using the technique of the camera eye, Dos Passos allows the reader to dive into different lives full of dreams and aspirations - only to cut away and cut back, creating a narrative mosaic of New York City from the Gilded Age to the Jazz Age.When she admits she only flirted with him for her own amusement, George threatens her with a pistol. While I haven’t read any of Stith’s other works, and this won’t make me rush out and by them, Manhattan Transfer is a likeable enough story and earns three-and-a-half out of five stars. All come because they are dissatisfied and become more dissatisfied as they acclimate to its brutality. And even the rich people seem lost, alienated, perpetually dissatisfied despite everything they have.

I had difficulty following the characters and the individual vignettes although some of the stories eventually became clearer. Scott Fitzgerald, and Manhattan Transfer is, like the Great Gatsby, a book about New York and the American Dream. The plot kept me engaged, and god, the ending satisfied me, not for any particularly unique or special reasons, just pure enjoyment and satisfaction. It’s also one of those opening paragraphs that, when you look back at the end of the novel, you realise contains within it the whole of what is to come. Some characters, like Helen, are spotted since birth, or, like Bud, for a shorter period, while others are only shadows without names, only a color, a smile, a dress that leaves however a lasting impression on mind even though they are not followed. Joe Harland—Known as the "Wizard of Wall Street", he has won and lost several fortunes over the years. This is sci-fi not romance, although there are attractions between Matt and Abby, the two protagonists in this book.

The last image of the novel, with Jimmy Herf, apparently free of love and society, keen to go “pretty far” is maybe the most tragic of all, for what is the river he travelled down by ferry but Styx? The Joycean influence comes in the love of compound words but also in the general construction of the work: brief scenes, which are not given any context or background. The book shows some of Dos Passos' experimental writing techniques and narrative collages that would become more pronounced in his U. Et je remercie malgré tout Bernard pour m’avoir conseillé cet achat (je le dis avec d’autant moins de gêne que c’est un échange fait chez une bouquiniste : ce bouquin contre les héraults de Valdemar.
