Description

I've recently worked with Portland Gallery on Edward Seago, Towner on Peggy Angus and the Ingram Collection on three exhibitions, the most recent being 'Changing Times'. The illustrations by Eric Ravilious, which have been taken out and reproduced in separate editions by English art houses, are charming. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. His four-volume series 'Ravilious in Pictures' (Mainstone Press) celebrates the life and work of English designer, printmaker and watercolourist Eric Ravilious (1903-42), exploring the stories and characters concealed behind his mesmerizing paintings. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged.

M. Richards pointed out in the foreword to the 1938 book, all real places, but in many cases we are given only tantalising clues as to their name or location.Written in large part for middle school children, High Street is a survey of the businesses to be found along a typical high street in the 1930s. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). His instantly recognisable style, palette and choice of subject have an almost universal appeal, a blend which has increased in popularity with the passing of time, particularly in the first two decades of the 21st century. In this context the Mainstone Press is pleased to announce the publication, in early December 2008, of The Story of High Street. Sir James Maude Richards (1907–1992) was editor of Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent of The Times for more than twenty years.

In a substantial and wide-ranging examination of the making of High Street, art historian Dr Alan Powers places the original 1938 book in historical context, giving new and significant insights into its conception, production and publication.Ravilious had initially proposed it to the Golden Cockerel Press, with whom he had previously worked, but they were unable to undertake such an ambitious project whereas Curwen's great interest in the area of lithography saw them subsidise the project. The specialist, whether selling cheese or stuffed animals, still has an important role to play, and in London particularly whole streets of independent businesses continue to prosper. Eric Ravilious: The Story of High Street was high on the artist’s admirers’ Christmas wish lists last year, despite several other new books about him having been published during 2008 by private presses and trade publishers. The window is lined with oyster shells to show that pearl fishing is one of the most important uses of diving apparatus. Notoriously hard to find in decent condition, as the publisher's pictorial boards are so fragile, and virtually unknown in its glassine complete with flaps.Sir James Richards (1907-92) was editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent to The Times for over 20 years. As a result he's not quite as well known as his friends and contemporaries Paul Nash and Edward Bawden, but his cult status is rapidly turning into full blown 'major important artist' status. The Maidstone Press reprinted the original images and text for this stunning new edition which includes essays by Alan Powers and James Russell as well as many other illustrations relating to the original book. Small bump to bottom corner of front cover, otherwise fine in fine card slipcase (apparently most copies were issued without the slipcase).
