She quickly leaves, but not before telling Meldrum that her on-off boyfriend Terry recently pressured her into having an abortion. Paced nicely with some solid kills and some standout tension despite limited resources, House of Mortal Sin features a doozy of a turn from Anthony Sharp as a obsessive murderous priest who’s just keen enough to go under the radar when it comes to investigative suspicions despite spitting out ramblings of an overbearing delusional maniac who gets his ya-ya’s off while overseeing confession. The Confessional (1975) - Pete Walker - Synopsis, Characteristics, Moods, Themes and Related - AllMovie".

Recommended on the Frank Dicaro show (XM radio), this is one of the campy horror flicks which didn't start out to be that way. Pete Walker’s House of Mortal Sin follows his familiar theme of institutional hypocrisy—using extortion, sexual perversion, and giallo-esque shock murders to lampoon the church like only Pete Walker can.

So I’m scrolling through Arrow’s “leaving soon” section and a bunch of Pete Walker films are there and somehow I didn’t even realize they had been there to begin with? THE CONFESSIONAL is also known as HOUSE OF MORTAL SIN (also available on Blu-Ray from Redemption Films/Kino Lorber under this title) and THE CONFESSIONAL MURDERS.

Outwardly a kind-hearted counsellor of troubled youth, Meldrum is in fact a fervent believer in " divine justice" who freely resorts to emotional abuse in his obsessive efforts to redeem those he views as sinners. The next day, Meldrum invites Jenny over to his presbytery, which he shares with his frail, bed-bound mother and his housekeeper, Miss Brabazon. I wanted to revisit some of Pete Walker's filmography because it's been over a decade since I've seen any of his '70s horror films and when they popped up in Arrow's "last chance" streaming section it was time to jog my memory. House of Mortal Sin is similar to House of Whipcord, as Walker turns his sights on a priest who takes it upon himself to cleanse people of their sins. We slowly learn that the good Father has a sickly mother (Hilda Barry) that he loves very dearly but is being abused by one-eyed caretaker Miss Brabazon (played eerily by Walker regular Shelia Keith), whose reasons for abusing her will be revealed later on.

So he's perfect casting as sexually obsessive Catholic priest Father Meldrum in this film, a man who gets his kicks in the confession box by asking his parishioners for more sexual details than is strictly necessary. Britischer (B-Movie) Horror (thriller) aus dem Jahr 1976, unter der Regie von Pete Walker mit Anthony Sharp. Meldrum uses his status and crazed persistence to work his way into Jenny's life by any means necessary. Walker fails to bring any sensibility, other than the merely exploitative, to the grotesque material, this must be considered pretty irredeemable stuff, even for a horror film. In 1983, when Cushing acted in Walker's final film, House of the Long Shadows, Walker learned that Cushing actually liked the script, but had other film commitments.
