This is by design, I think, to make the book feel more authentic, but this works too well as it comes across a bit dry and boring. These are the histories of all the long dead and crazy Kings and Queens we’ve heard our favourite characters dream about and wish they were.

As other reviewers have mentioned It is written more as a history than a story driven by characters so it can be hard to get involved as one does with the other books. Fire and Blood explored the history of the Targaryen Kings from the time of Aegon I’s conquest up to the ascension of Aegon III. The anger of the fandom becomes more understandable seeing we're fed subpar bits like this that aren't worth it. It's hard not to thrill to the descriptions of dragons engaging in airborne combat, or the dilemma of whether defeated rulers should 'bend the knee, ' 'take the black' and join the Night's Watch, or simply meet an inventive and horrible end. Given the significance of the novels and impact on popular culture the books will always retain their value with likely appreciation for years to come.The trouble is that Martin, despite advancing age, does not seem to care anymore about what his fans want. In this world, siblings and children are often given very similar names, often, a child will have the same name as a parent or sibling with just one letter changed. And plenty of action too, of the kind you associate with Game of Thrones: wars, conspiracies, betrayals, beheadings, poisonings going on all over Westeros, with additional dollops of violence and mayhem floating in from across the Narrow Sea.
