Hanging velvet clothes on a padded hanger helps keep them crease-free. Avoid folding velvet, if possible. How to iron viscose

You can also use a starch spray if you want to leave your clothes looking extra fresh. Simply dissolve one tablespoon of cornflour in two cups of water, add to a spray bottle and spray the garment a few seconds before you start ironing. It will keep your soleplate clean too. In truth, this is probably the Azur’s most distinctive feature. If you’re worried you’ll never get round to cleaning and caring for your iron, it could well be the best one for you. If you have a sewn interlining in your collar, make sure to iron from the outside in and use short ironing strokes. If you just iron in one motion you will get wrinkles in the shirt. 7. Iron the Yoke If you have delicates that need ironing, do them first because your iron should be on a lower heat setting. Start with the garment that needs the lowest temperature and move up. Again, the auto-shut off function provides peace of mind; and a ceramic sole plate means it glides smoothly. You can also use it for vertical steaming, on clothes which are hanging up, as well as on your ironing board. With 2600w of power, it doesn’t get quite as hot and steamy as the Tefal Ultimate Pure – but I liked the spray nozzle and option to use a 210g steam shot to get rid of entrenched creases (although you have to wait four seconds between each shot).

Our pick of the best steam irons for a pain-free ironing experience

A basic rule of thumb is that delicates, synthetics and silk should be ironed at low temperatures, wool on medium, and linens and cotton on high. Make sure your iron has an auto-shutoff. Although most modern household irons do, some of the older models floating around do not. You want the peace of mind knowing that even if you forgot to turn off the iron this morning you’re not going to start a fire. Classic steam irons should be more than powerful enough for everyday household use, letting out steam to moisten and relax the fabric before you remove the creases. I remember in the Marines using cans of spray starch in an effort to get the perfect “crisp” look; however, just as often I would overdue it and be dealing with flakes due to over starching or not letting it set in.

Place the shirt on the board and fold the sleeve so that the crease will form from the shoulder point. If there are permanent folds on the shirt, make sure the sleeve is folded along those crease lines before you start ironing. Stretch the sleeves and smooth out both layers with your hands to prevent new wrinkles from forming. It's no use spending ages getting the creases out of your best tablecloth or set of curtains if you're then going to let them hang over the sides of your ironing board to get wrinkled all over again. This means you can slowly turn up the heat on your iron without waiting around for ages for the temperature to change, so accidentally scorching your favourite shirt will be a thing of the past.Let the iron heat up If you've increased the temperature, make sure you give the iron enough time to heat up – or you needn't have bothered adjusting the thermostat. Similarly, allow the iron to cool if you've turned the temperature down.

Of the three major garments worn for tailored clothing, a dress shirt is the easiest to iron and the best one, to begin with when learning how to iron correctly. Preparations begin in the laundry room. Though you would never throw a suit into the washing machine, cotton dress shirts will obviously find their way into the wash, and how you handle them when they come out can help with effective ironing. You need to hang up or fold your clothes for at least five minutes to let the press fully set, leaving you with longer-lasting results and reducing the chances of any rogue creases reappearing halfway through the day. Whether you're ironing bed sheets or clothes, it's best to iron cotton while it's still damp. Iron on a high heat and use lots of steam. You want the shirts to be moist (not soaking wet). This will enable you to dry iron without having to worry about your iron’s steam function. Ideally you have recently pulled the shirts from the washing machine; if they are already dry, however, just take them and thoroughly mist them with the spray bottle. Once finished, place them in a plastic bag to better diffuse the moisture and prevent evaporation. Why the need for heat? Certain fabrics, cotton and linen being two of them, require high heat to reform their shape. A hotter iron can cut ironing time in half, vs. one that forces you to pass and remain on the same part of the garment for 45 seconds. Also, steam production relies on the soleplate’s temperature and higher temps produce steadier steam. If you don't have an iron... hang clothes in a steamy bathroom (using it as an excuse to take a long, hot shower). This won't give you the same crispness as ironing, but your clothes will be a little less crinkled than before. If you literally have no time to iron then at least throw the shirt in the dryer (assuming you’ve dried it like this before) while you throw on the rest of your clothing. Five minutes tumbling in the warm air will help to loosen some of the worst wrinkles. Starching a shirt the proper way requires rice starch and it is an entirely different process. Sometimes you may find cheap spray starch products that promise a military-style result but ultimately the results are mediocre and if you use too much heat you’ll end up with stains. Hence we suggest not to use them. If there is enough demand we might do another video on how to properly starch a shirt at home. Do I Need to Iron Wrinkle Free Shirts? Iron your shirts in batches. Ironing a shirt only takes a few minutes, but half of that time is taken up with preparation–getting the ironing board set up, the iron filled and hot, etc. So use your time more effectively by ironing all your shirts in one batch instead of whenever you need one.
