Je me suis dit que la meilleure façon de me faire une idée de ce groupe, était d'acheter une sorte de "pot pourri" de l'ensemble de leur production, incluant le morceau figurant dans HUSH. The group has only released four proper albums over the past 15 years: one absolute must-have masterpiece, two excellent long-players of languidly existential mood-music, and one total piece of shit. Much of the older tunes sound remarkably contemporary, which isn't surprising when you consider Massive Attack have always mixed styles in radical, new ways. And finally, coming with the first CD there is a bonus CD of good previously-unreleased tracks (which I haven't spent much time on), the DVD of promo videos (which, like the CD side, I didn't spin too often yet), and a nice picture booklet. Der Clou ist nun aber, dass diese sich nahtlos in die Gesamtkonzeption des Albums einfügen und nie deplatziert wirken.

I feel alive"-attitude I find in Prodigy's music (and their goal was never to make deep music anyway). Notes: The tracks on this release are all edited snippets of the full songs, which explains the abbreviated duration times. Massive Attack's music brings back memories: not that crazy weekend you piled into a van and drove down to New Orleans for New Year's Eve, but those quiet and isolated instants, images that stuck in your mind for no reason, moments when your life started to feel like a movie. Collected, a best-of compilation straddling the group's career, is the kind of record that reeks "contractual obligation," but that's not meant as a diss.com The group who single-handedly created the woozy, sexual, cinematic, and meditative dance genre known as trip-hop with their 1991 masterpiece Blue Lines later went on to craft gorgeous soundtrack music and generally emerge as one of the most forward-thinking, fastidious, and s-l-o-w production teams in pop music. I slid on my Walkman and tried not to move until the whole thing was over, but then something amazing happened. Or, justement, c'est en visionnant un petit thriller "hush, en route vers l'enfer" (pas mal aussi), que j'ai entendu la première chanson du générique de fin, interprétée par MASSIVE ATTACK. Massive Attack have never been anyone's idea of a singles act, and that's what makes the idea of a best-of album a bit dodgy.

Bref, j'écoute maintenant le CD "Collected" en boucle sur le lecteur de mon auto, et ne m'en lasse pas ! Where it differs is, while I have my preference for Prodigy (I have seen them playing live but not MA), I think I find Massive's music is the best, and this is because I (instinctively, probably) give more *value* to the "I'm feeling like a lost fish in the sea"-attitude I find in their music (like in a lot of other good melodic music) than to the good old "fuck yeah! Notes: The colour of the disc is black with 3 letter abbreviations for each of the 14 songs running along the outer edge. Neil Davidge plays keyboards on tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 10, guitar on tracks 1, 4, and 6, bass on track 7, and provides backing vocals on track 4. Shoehorned into one of those two-engine propeller planes, surrounded by screaming kids, snow starting to fall, warnings of turbulence crackling over the loudspeakers, nothing looked good.If a kick-ass collection like this is what it takes for this heady group to keep the record execs happy while they slowly hone a new album, so be it.

There are so many many personal favourites on this compilation that it would be useless to name them: you just need to have a look at the tracklisting, most of it is made of my personal favourites. Massive Attack are an English trip hop collective formed in 1988 in Bristol by Robert "3D" Del Naja, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. There is a close second to this musical preference, it is Massive Attack, but I don't know the latter's discography with the same depth and I haven't known them for as much time (so I can't compare them on the lasting appeal). This CDR contains full length instrumental versions of all 14 tracks found on the Collected album, which were never made available anywhere else or haven't even leaked online to this day.
