We assess the consistency of the sandwiches’ colour and note the evenness of toasting. Finally, we test how easy each appliance is to clean, because no one wants to spend hours scrubbing away melted cheese. With lots of ingredients at play, toastie makers can be fiddly to clean. Look for models with removable plates that are dishwasher-safe. Our testers prepared several toasties – usually of the ham, cheese and tomato variety – in 29 different machines to gauge how long they took to heat up and cook. Their plates have deeper wells that can be filled with pastry and fruit for yummy turnovers, or eggy batter, cheese and vegetables, resulting in enviable omelettes. Sandwich toasters versus grillsIt doesn’t really matter to much which you use e.g. butter, olive oil, rapeseed oil. Just that you cover the outside well. A well basted Toastie will crisp up nicely in the sandwich maker. The perfect toasted sandwich has a crispy outer shell and the best way to get it is with some butter or oil. Detachable plates aren't always as convenient as they first seem - they often have small gaps where they attach, which your fillings can leak into and make the toastie maker difficult to clean.

The main thing to consider before you buy is the plates. Do you want deep-fill ones so you can cram in as much filling as possible, or would you like removable plates that you can put in the dishwasher so your kitchen can be clean ASAP?

They should also effectively seal the sandwiches to prevent any messy leakage. We timed how long it took each toastie maker to switch on the 'ready to cook' light multiple times, to work out the average time you'll be waiting for it to heat up. Touch the handles but nowhere else - wear heatproof gloves if you can. The sides and tops of the toastie makers we tested were too hot to touch anywhere except the handles.
