About this deal

She kept the record label at arms’ length throughout. This was probably just as well as EMI, and its new boss, David Munns, would surely have been alarmed by the avant-garde ambitions of “The Ninth Wave”. This series of linked compositions took its title from a line in the Tennyson poem “ Idylls of the King: The Coming of Arthur”. Bush’s ambition was to bring the listener on a voyage into death and rebirth with fear of drowning a recurring metaphor. Or consider when "This Woman's Work" opened the second season of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. The show took a song full of twinkling chords and lilting vocals, written for a John Hughes movie, and played it over the horrifying image of 45 bound and muzzled handmaids being fitted with nooses on a gallows. In Hughes's 1988 romcom She’s Having a Baby, "This Woman's Work" scores a scene in which Kevin Bacon's character waits for his wife, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, to come out of the complicated delivery of their first child. Bush wrote the lyrics from a man's point of view as he reflects on his love and longing for a wife in the middle of her "woman's work"—that is, childbirth: "I stand outside this woman's work, this woman's world," she sings. "Oh, it's hard on the man, now his part is over." In Handmaid's Tale, set in a dystopian—and not too unimaginable—future where reproductive rights are a nonstarter and women are chattel, the song is played for wrenching irony. Versions of the song have played in everything from Love & Basketball to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Song written by Kate Bush, released as her debut single in January 1978. She wrote the song after seeing the last ten minutes of the 1967 BBC mini-series based on the book ‘Wuthering Heights’, written by Emily Brontë. Reportedly, she wrote the song within the space of just a few hours late at night. The actual date of writing is estimated to be March 5, 1977. Kate Bush releases 'The Other Sides' compilation as standalone 4CD set – SuperDeluxeEdition" . Retrieved 19 October 2021. Part of a 45 min BBC Kate Bush Christmas special. This song is otherwise unreleased. (Originally written by Roy Harper)

Wuthering Heights’ was finally released on 20 January 1978, was immediately playlisted by Capital Radio and entered their chart at no. 39 on 27 January. It crept into the national Top 50 in week ending 11 February at No.42. The following week it rose to No.27 and Bush made her first appearance on Top of the Pops (“It was like watching myself die”, recalls Bush), The song was finally added to Radio One’s playlist the following week and became one of the most played records on radio. When the song reached number 1, it was the first UK number 1 written and performed by a female artist. The silence finally broke with Aerial in 2005, which was preceded by a high-charting single, ‘King Of The Mountain’, which returned her to the UK Top 5 for the first time in 20 years. The ambitious album followed a format established by Hounds Of Love, comprising one collection of linked but independent songs and a longer set on what, in the vinyl era, would have been the second side. The album sold solidly but Kate’s promotional appearances to support it were limited and critical acclaim outstripped its commercial performance. None of this would likely have mattered to the enigmatic artist who was more determined than ever that her output is appreciated on its own terms. Kate re-recorded ‘Wuthering Heights’ for the compilation album ‘The Whole Story’ in 1986. It was released as ‘Wuthering Heights (New Vocal)’. There is no info that it's a different or new version, or even who remixed it or when, but as far as I know this is the first time that this new and shorter version appeared. There are two versions of ‘Wuthering Heights’. The album version remains the best known version, but there is also an edited version of 3 minutes and 44 seconds, fading out earlier than the album version, which was released on the first version of the 7″ single.
