Description

This was an audiobook from NetGalley and I listened to it doing that most mindful of things, an enormous jigsaw puzzle. I found it really great to listen and contemplate the way I worry, to take notes and later mull over some of the learnings. Numerous doctors and psychiatrists have lauded the book for its accessible prose and methodical explanations. Over thinking is often an exercise in the excessive use of cognitive bias that is not helpful. This should not be confused with critical thinking, which is an examination of different sources of information and weighing their respective merits.

Overthinking isn’t about overthinking: Over thinking is when you excessively analyze, evaluate, ruminate, and worry about certain things to a point where it starts affecting your mental health because you simply can’t stop. Sources of anxiety that lead to overthinking: ourselves (26% genetics) and environment (cluttered/dimly lit/noisy). Negative consequences of overthinking: physical (racing heart, fatigue, headaches, muscle tension) and mental (irritability, nervousness). Eustress (everyday stress) that keeps us on our toes and challenges us to be better. To flourish, we don’t need a stress free environment, we need one that’s optimally suited to our needs. It’s not the load, but how you carry it. Whether you feel an event as stressful and overwhelming comes down to how you interpret and understand that event. A person who is constantly stressed and anxious starts to lose all meaning and joy in life, stops making plans, cannot act with charity or compassion to others, and loses their passion for life.I’m a very indecisive person. I could think about my choices for long hours or days without arriving at an answer. And when I finally happen to make the decision, I keep asking myself whether I made the wrong choice. And it keeps lurking on my mind for days. This book offers a no-nonsense approach to overcoming self-doubt, negative thinking, and self-sabotage. The book encourages readers to take responsibility for their lives and to stop making excuses for their failures and shortcomings. Bishop provides practical strategies for changing one’s mindset and breaking free from negative patterns of thinking and behavior. The book is written in a straightforward and blunt style with a focus on empowering readers. This is a self-help book written by Gwendoline Smith, a clinical psychologist who specializes in anxiety and depression. The book offers practical advice and strategies to help readers break free from the cycle of overthinking and worry that can lead to anxiety, stress, and depression.

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche practices contentment in everyday life and claims to be the “happiest man in the world.” Clear Your Mind: Stop Overthinking, Tune Out Mental Chatter And Worry Less – Balance Your Emotional And Rational Mind by Steven Schuster

According to Stoic philosophy, much of our suffering and stress comes from trying to control or change things that are beyond our control, such as the actions of others or the outcome of events. By learning to accept what is beyond our control and to focus on what we can control, we can reduce the tendency to get caught up in overthinking and find greater inner peace and fulfillment. This book explores spiritual concepts and if you are looking for something more scientific, this book is great but may not be the one for you. The Art of Living by Epictetus This a spiritual guidebook that explores the nature of happiness and how it can be cultivated through mindfulness and compassion. In the book, Rinpoche discusses the role that overthinking and negative thought patterns can play in causing suffering, and how mindfulness and compassion can help to reduce these patterns. The stark truth is that you can’t worry and ruminate extensively about everything that’s gone wrong, or will go wrong, and at the same time stay emotionally balanced and without burdensome symptoms. Naturally, you’ll sometimes need to thoroughly think things through. So, what to do? My advice is that, if you want the best of both worlds – fewer symptoms and room for contemplation – then set yourself the worry/rumination time, as I described in the ‘What to Do’ section, and postpone your worries and ruminations to that specific time. So, it’s not the trigger thought in and of itself that will overwhelm you and lead to a variety of unpleasant symptoms; nor is it the amount of trigger thoughts you have (everyone has them). The problems arise if you continuously jump on to each train – that is, if you begin to analyse the thought and engage in extensive worry or rumination – then it’s like you’re adding more and more carriages to the train, one after another; the train gets heavier and slower, and will eventually have trouble passing even the slightest hill. The same goes for your trigger thoughts: the more time you spend engaging in these thoughts, the slower and heavier you will feel. After exploring this roadmap of worry, the book explains how to break free from this never-ending cycle. That being said, we hope you enjoyed reading through our list of good books to help prevent overthinking. There’s no single book that will clear your mind immediately. Additionally, while we want you to live a worry-free life, it’s also important to remember that it may be a long journey for some. Now you are showering me with lectures that I can achieve ANYTHING, I can BE POSITIVE, I can have mental peace, I can do this I can do that. How on earth? We can't stop worrying, neither we can leave our families.
