The sole of the Giro Ventana is a relatively mildly treaded ‘Sensor’ rubber sole. There’s a full rubber covering, including the instep, with slightly chunkier heel and forefoot tread. The toe tread is very minimal. On The Trail Therefore I was on the hunt for a new pair to add to my collection with more forgiving characteristics. The Giro Ventana seemed to be the shoe that met most, if not all, my criteria. I’ve been using a pair for six months now, and feel like I have put enough riding time in them to give them a proper review. Who is it for? While the lower profile should make them work well on a platform style clipless shoe, the rubber compound meant they skated and slid more than we’d like whether clipped in or not. Together with the inboard cleat position meaning less outboard foot support, that meant we had to raise the grip pegs to reduce accidental unclip or foot slip issues. The inboard cleat position definitely aligns the shoe more with DH rather than trail riders too. The benefits of this cleat position are to have your foot in a more neutral position on the pedals and minimize heel rub on wide chainstays typical on modern long-travel bikes. SPD pedal traditionalists, however, might need an adjustment period to get used to this unusual cleat position. Features and styling
