We should talk about your new Care Bears collaboration. What made Care Bears an attractive brand to design for? The range launches online and at the brand’s flagship store in Piccadilly on 14 November. It is offered across all Cath Kidston’s product categories from homeware to apparel and accessories, including the new teenage sizing. Cath Kidston has announced it has hand-painted its new range of wistful and dream-like prints to celebrate the 40 th anniversary of the Care Bears™. They were great. They were excited and supportive of the creation of the print. We never use the assets singularly – we always paint the scenery they go in – and Bulldog were really excited to see these print evolve. Holly, a huge thanks for taking time out for this. I have one last question: How do you fuel your creativity?

Inspired by the original watercolor paintings by Elena Kucharik in the early ’80s, the limited-edition collaboration organized in association with U.K. agent, You’re now Creative Director at Cath Kidston. I’d imagine the day-to-day life of a Creative Director greatly differs from company to company, so what does a typical day look like for you? If there is one! We responded to these by creating a print where our florals morphed into the bears with fluid painterly brush strokes, with our similar icons nestled in-between. We also created an impactful psychedelic design with pink and red large graphic clouds and stars, where the Care Bears really shone out thanks to their painterly effect. Inspired by the original ‘80s paintings of the Care Bears™, the characters have been redrawn and meticulously hand-painted by the Cath Kidston design team. Dreamscapes, rainbows and flowers, moons and stars, love hearts and cupcakes adorn this wondrous collection.

All our prints are illustrated to tell stories, so it is important to reflect these stories within the shoot.

There always seems to be one excited fan amongst us – an expert within our team for each brand we work on! Their passion for these characters and the memories they spark always helps us with ideas for prints. Inspired by the original watercolour paintings by Elena Kucharik in the early ’80s, the limited edition collaboration – organised in association with Bulldog Licensing – aims to play on the nostalgia and love of colour and print that is used regularly by Cath Kidston to deliver its recognisable products. The ‘Wish Big’ print shows the characters presented as classic cherubs; the ‘Believe’ print sees the Care Bears adventuring across an ‘explosion’ of watercolour flowers, hearts, rainbows, cupcakes and moons; ‘Bedtime Bear’ sees them floating on clouds in the midnight sky – each character is engaged in a different activity: one is asleep, another is gathering flowers, while two others are chatting on a tin-can telephone.
