Well… putting a Zener directly across GND and 24V … not having thought about it is the nicer option. They tried to protect the USB-PD Chip but did so in a way that immediately fries if you go above 21V. Now their statement is “there is no problem without protection”. QC 12V phone chargers will not provide enough power to support your Pinecil device (See power selection for details about power options) The quality of the device out the box even when its open does matter. That said its a solder iron, that get hot in only a few seconds – that tells you its not going to be bad power wise. I’d like to thank Alex (clover) Ben Brown (Ralim), pillow, JF and PizzaLovingNerd for their contributions to this community update. Recommend operating voltage 12-24V, but a 12V USB-C charger will not perform as well or heat as fast as a USB-C PD65W/20V/3amp charger.

Any USB-C power supply that supports PD (Power Delivery) and has at least the minimum Volt/amps listed should work. The USB-C PD65W, 3.25A, 20V is recommended, but a lower PD45W will also work on V1. We tested Pinecil V2 with a simple flashing LED project kit. We used the supplied conical short tip and connected the iron to a PinePower desktop power supply with a USB C port capable of delivering 65 Watts. Pinecil V2 made short work of the kit, the lead solder melted perfectly, with peaks that connected the PCB to the component. There were no cold solder joints (where the solder doesn’t bridge between the PCB and component) and our LEDs flashed happily.

not for me and I own two V1 original models and 2 of the newest V2 models. part of this is Pinecil has the Silicone comfort grip at the end. to enter menu or decrease temperature, long press [-] to get the software version info or to turn off heating EPR is new technology in 2022. Theoretically Pinecil could get a max of 28V and 126W using EPR chargers & EPR cables (natural loss of 140W to 126W due to Tip ohms).

You can supply 24V via the barrel plug. (Although they officially decreased the rating to 21V). The tip has ~9Ohm so at 20V it draws <2.5A. You can use a 100W supply, but it will only use ~45W at 20V.
