Did I leave anything out? Do you have something to add to this review from your own experience? Taking your Osprey Kestrel 48 for a test hike? Then let us know by leaving a comment below! You should also be aware that the Osprey Kestrel comes in a smaller 38l version. When you pit the Osprey Kestrel 38 vs 48 there’s not much difference besides the sizes of the bag… obviously! So when it comes to choosing whether to opt for the Kestrel 38 vs 48, it’s all about which size of bag works best for the type of trip you’re heading off on and how much gear you think you’ll need. Cons of the Osprey Kestrel 48

Side tension straps are linked to the hipbelt. By tightening these straps you can stabilise the load but reduce the hipbelt flexibility. Where balance is critical tightening them can help you feel more secure. However, if you are striding out over easy terrain it’s better to loosen these straps to allow full hip flexibility. In short, Kestrel 48 would be a great match for weekend hiking & camping trips, although I'd also consider getting Stratos 50 [ read my review ]. Mesh pouch on the front is useful for any item that you'd like to isolate from the inner, dryer items. It isn't zippered or attached with a velcro, so you're left with relying on the force of mesh compression to keep the items in their place. Design and colorsare changed, and the famous Jungle green isn't available anymore! Instead, now they offer them in Picholine Green (which I think looks very pretty) in addition to other 3 colors.Osprey’s hydration system is pretty well designed – you will get a few magnets that you attach to the shoulder straps, which allow for completely hands-free hydration. And since the hydration sleeve is an external one, you don’t have to worry about it leaking inside the main compartment and over your clothes. With a weight of almost 3.4 pounds, it is far lighter than my Aether. And 48 litres is plenty for a long journey. In addition you can even add extra clothes and important equipment without any hesitation. There’s always some space in your osprey kestrel 48! If you often go on overnight hiking trips, then you’ll love this feature. The sleeping bag compartment is at the very bottom of the bag and it’s pretty spacious– so much so that you can easily stuff a few other items inside it, apart from just the bag.

Total 10 Gear Loops: 2 ice tool loops on the front, 2 trekking pole loops on the straps, 2 removable sleeping pad straps, 2 daisy chains and 2 compression straps that can be utilized for attaching extra gear. Ice tool loops Sleeping pad straps are another useful gear attachment pointthat the Kestrel 48 is equipped with. And they will save you plenty of space inside the main compartment of your bag. Fixed Top LidIf you're planning extended camping trips (5+ days) with lots of long distances of walking it probably won't fill the bill due to its medium-large size and deficient suspension with heavy loads.
