Description

Instead of an angry dragon ready to breath mighty flame at the noisy invaders, an angry AI named Lord Eradikus is ready to fry at the slightest sound made on his ship.

Depending on the number of players you have in the game, you place the Lord Eradikus marker on the rage track, and different actions move him up the track. Note: even though I like Cyberstation 11, I think it’s a really smart move on the part of Renegade Game Studios to create a simple expansion that adds variety without bogging the game system down with too many complications. I do feel the game is a bit more complicated than the original as well as there are new card mechanics to learn. Are they tired of you trying to endlessly convince them that games ‘aren’t what they remember from being a kid’ and ‘they’re different now’ but no one tends to agree on one that doesn’t involve the generation of lumber/sheep/wheat? You'll have to navigate his spaceship, deal with the enemies that stand in the way, and acquire valuable technology. The basic premise is the same, players take the mantle of an interloper looking to burgle goods from a perilous destination.

In both iterations of the game, players start with 10 basic cards from which they draw five, all of which they have to play. We are a group of passionate individuals who share our love of board games through written and video reviews, articles, and humor, so that others can join us in our journey. I love being able to install it and get the benefit every turn (or, if you get one of the more powerful ones that have to be activated, getting the effect when you play the right class of card). The board has some information overload at first, but once you’re familiar with the rules it’s easy to decipher. On this occasion, rather than delving into a dragon’s lair, players are now tiptoeing around the evil Lord Eradikus Prime’s giant spaceship, which is full of precious loot! The trick with Cyberware, though, is that if you spend a power crystal when you play the card, you can install it! So on every turn, players move throughout the ship using the movement cards, trying to obtain items to help them along the way. That said I have so much fun building my deck and just chatting about the game with other players during play that I don’t even mind the low interaction.

There are also hyperlifts and telepads throughout the ship, making movement easier if you are able to access them. However if you manage to make it to AT LEAST the docking area of the board before you die you can keep you acquired points. It keeps the tension really high as you play and even scores you at the end of each game based on how well you did. This slows you down in the early game, limiting the sprint in and out strategy of the original, by requiring you to hack two of the green terminals spread throughout the modules (done simply by moving into the space with them).

The missed opportunity with this expansion is that there is really no deck-thinning ability added with these new cards. Some cyberware is even better, but it requires certain classes of cards to have been played that turn to activate it. It’s nail biting fantasy stuff as the dragon won’t sit quietly, and you forgot to pack your flame retardant undies.
