At 45cm long this is the longest locomotive LEGO has produced and I think it looks excellent. The brown livery looks understated and sophisticated and, as Jamie said to us during our interview, it's a colour that is often overlooked and doesn't see as much use in LEGO sets as perhaps it should. Can anyone who is running a Large motor (PF or PU) with an Emerald Night comment on whether you made any gear changes? But I am glad we got this review well in advance of the release date! I am impressed, and convinced I need to build some elevated "electric" lines over my rails so this Crocodile Locomotive can run as intended!"

Overall, a worthy addition to LEGO's loco shed and one that will undoubtedly be highly sought-after and revered long after its retirement. This would look great in my grandad’s office. He likes trains a lot and has a very large model railway in his garage. Might be an idea for Christmas if the whole family puts some money towards it, I’d it stays on the shelves that long...

Ah, but the question is, do you believe you are _owed_ credit for this set? Because a few people seem to think you are. Prefacing by saying I've never had a Lego train before; so I know very little about this area of Lego. I would like a steam engine with coaches; and as far as I know, Emerald Night is the only official Lego set like that. I have seen tons of amazing steam engine mocs, but haven't found any with free instructions that are similar to the Emerald Night. So EN it is, then. Since it's my first train, I should start smaller anyway. After I build a new Lego set I always have a few small pieces left. Did I forget to use them? Verified For comparison, the 10277 Crocodile uses a straight 1:1 gear ratio with a Powered Up Large motor and the same size driver wheels. I love Lego trains! I still believe it is a theme that TLG should spend more energy and focus, not deliver 20 sets in a year, but imagine, acessories and small builds such as stations or rail crossings would be very welcome even for kids. I remember collecting 9v sets and we had cargo stations, cleaning sheds, multiple railroad maintenance vehicles... Will buy this one for display "

One more thing to consider is the gear ratio. The Emerald Night was originally spec'd for the Power Functions XL motor (8882), which runs at a lower RPM and puts out more torque than any of the other three LEGO motors you might consider (Power Functions Large, Powered Up Large, Powered Up XL). So it might require some tinkering to see what works best for you (in terms of what you find to be an acceptable speed and amount of pulling power). The noses are 7-wide with a narrower 5-wide upper section. The two 2x4 tiles on the front looks a bit awkward but does appear to be roughly prototypical. There sure are plenty of iconic US trains but I would love to know whether there are any Chinese trains that could even remotely be called iconic. Hell, I am quite the train guy tbh, but all that comes to mind when I think of Chinese trains is either licenced versions of other countries' locos or run-of-the-mill utilitarian workhorses with no sort of rememberability whatsoever.
