When drying, the caulk will shrink, which can lead to the paint film being compromised due to the movement.

Caulk is a flexible filler and is ideal for areas that might have a bit of movement such as skirting boards, door frames and windows. This longer time frame will allow the caulk to completely dry, but it will also allow you to see any larger gaps that you need to apply more caulk to. Caulking skirting boards is the answer to getting rid of those annoying spaces that stop you getting a crisp clean painted line between your wall and skirting. Hold the gun at the start of the gap and at an angle to the surface then, squeeze the trigger smoothly to get an even flow of caulk coming out of the nozzle. If you’re fixing the skirting to a masonry wall then use a 6mm masonry drill bit to drill through the skirting and into the wall. Caulks like all decorating supplies come in various forms, which makes it imperative to make sure you are using the most suitable caulk for the job.

Many fitted furniture makers also use caulk when installing fitted furniture as it is perfect for filling in the small gaps between the furniture and the wall. Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent. Assuming you aren't lifting up your carpet, I'd suggest you run a broad strip of masking tape as close to your skirting boards as you can without them touching the wood.A full A4 size sheet should be enough for the doors, skirting board and window sill of a 4m x 4m room.

Silicone is more flexible and water-resistant, making it ideal for areas that experience a lot of movement and moisture. You can lay a bead of caulk in cramped quarters this way, but it’s hard to squeeze out a consistent, even bead. The caulking is then covered over with a putty, in the case of hull seams, or else in deck seams with melted pine pitch, in a process referred to as paying, or " calefaction".So, while it may look good at first, once the wood moves, the caulk is likely to crack because there is barely any of it filling the crack.
