More defiantly, he exalts the persistence of commercial sex spaces in the face of ‘antisex and homphobic policings,’ and celebrates the overlay of punk and queer in performance spaces. it helped also to think about Louis Gluck's Eros the Bittersweet; which was sort of about knowledge+love, and how knowledge+love is an action of reaching towards something perfect but not attaining it perfectly, just reaching all the time. i like thinking about the fusion of amateurism and voyeurism as missing something like resources and time and support and having something like ability or passion or hope.

A dazzling masterpiece of critical theory and cultural analysis, maintaining a firm focus on the key political issues while illustrating them through detailed and beautifully written analyses of queer performance and visual art.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Gay liberation’s activist past and pragmatic present are merely prologue to a queer cultural future, Muñoz suggests in this critical condemnation of the political status quo. there is the suggestion that these traces can change your outlook and give you Hope, and that Hope is important for change, but not very many bones beyond that.Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity is a book in the field of queer theory by José Esteban Muñoz, published in 2009. And yet, the general reception of Cruising Utopia has focused on the book’s emphasis on hope and futurity. That is to say, Muñoz exemplifies the necessity for change embodied in time and space, and the constant (re)consideration(s) of hope and potentiality inherent in queer Otherness. Muñoz is a brilliant close reader and I wished the scope of this academic project allowed for more of that.

Opening with the audacious claim that ‘queerness is not yet here’, the first page of Cruising Utopia introduces the reader to the book’s central thesis – that queerness is a future-oriented, profoundly utopian mode of being and doing in the world. José Esteban Muñoz (1967–2013) was Professor and Chair of Performance Studies at New York University.I wasn't totally sold on a lot of the philosophical moves he pulled but overall i thought this book was pretty fucking entertaining. Hermoso pensar en 'lo queer' como una utopía necesaria al tiempo que se problematiza a 'lo utópico'. that really helped me think about camp, and care about the concept of camp, in a way i hadn't before.
