Auto-Vox V5 Pro Mirror Dash Cam - Nerd Techy Review of the Auto-Vox V5 Pro Mirror Dash Cam - Nerd Techy

Will removing the existing mirror stop anything working - auto lights - auto rain sensor or is all the stuff that makes that work in the stalk above the mirror?

Hardware specs

Since it connects directly to your car’s fuse box, you can expect continuous recording, especially when your car is parked. In fact, the folks at Nerd Techy opine that the Auto-Vox doubles up as an excellent parking camera too. The unit automatically records by default, though you can also stop and start recording at any time. This is especially useful if you're parked but still want to record.

To install, the camera is connected to the reversing light for power and the video and a control lead which tells the system when reverse is engaged to it takes over the display. The camera is IP69 waterproof, and can survive a carwash, while the view has been improved over its predecessor. Along the bottom edge, there is a power button. You can choose to turn off the mirror and use it as a traditional mirror.Choosing the right dash cam means shopping around and finding the one that has the features you need. It also means finding a reliable manufacturer you can trust. Auto-Vox is one such manufacturer. In the past, we’ve reviewed their Auto-Vox Aurora and Auto-Vox T1400 dash cam systems. Today, we’ll be reviewing their V5 Pro. Where the devices differ is in the design department. In the case of mirror dash cams, you may have to replace the factory-fitted rearview mirror of your car. Or, you may have to strap the new dash cam on top of your car’s rearview mirror. Many dash cams on the market are beginning to boast 4K resolution, but as is always the case with cameras, the resolution doesn't tell the whole story. While the AUTO-VOX V5 is limited to 1080p resolution, it uses a Sony sensor with F/1.8 aperture for both the front and rear cameras, meaning the quality of the video is decent at the source. There are numerous options ranging from what to display to when to record. These are all easily accessible by pressing the options icon at the bottom of the on-screen display.

V5 Pro - AUTO-VOX

In the 2nd pic you can see a plug still connected. That's for the rain sensor. The wire dangling down is the plug for the mirror sensor which is for auto dip main beam I believe which I could live without or maybe I could retrofit to the V5 pro? Not sure. Looking at the pics of the V5 pro it doesn't look like it will be compatible but as you can see in the pic above the clip will unscrew so I'm wondering if I can bodge something up? The only problem then is the plastic trim because the front bit shown in the 1st pic with the red arrow attaches to the casting of the mirror above so that would need to be bodged too.Useful for many are Yada’s fitting assistance efforts, including videos, a toll-free helpline (in the USA), and their catalog of professional installers, so fitting shouldn’t be a chore, and the system is 12 or 24V compatible and, once fitted, is triggered automatically by reverse gear. These are the benefits of an established brand and model (the downside is newer designs have higher resolution, but this has all the important features). Garmin also offer a battery wireless camera which can be attached to the top of a license plate, the Garmin BC40, but the BC35 comes with a good length power cable (15ft/4.5m) but a slightly random selection of other cables with the fuse flimsily mounted in the lead. We touched on this at the top, but being limited to 1080p isn't a problem for day-to-day use with the V5. When it comes to what you see on the rear-view mounted display, you wouldn't see a higher resolution anyway. When it comes to recorded files, they looked fine and I can't think of many ways in which higher-resolution would have helped. The Vantreu M2 is yet another great rear view mirror dash cams for cars. If you must know, Vantrue is a formidable name in the dash cam scene, and the Vantrue M2 lives up to the company’s legacy as well. Like its counterpart above, it also requires its share of wiring, especially for the rear camera. But once done, you will have an excellent mirror dash cam with impressive picture quality at your disposal. The mirror records clips of 1, 3, or 5 minutes in a loop, up to the capacity of the card. Once full, it will begin overwriting starting with the oldest clip. One really nice feature is how the files are stored. All front videos are stored in a folder called “F” and rear videos in a folder called “R”. Both front and read clips start simultaneously and have sequential names like FILE200809-214241-000035F.MOV. The name contains the date (minus the century “20” of “2020”) and time of the recording (in military time), a sequence number, and “F” or “R”, depending on which camera took the video. If you choose the same sequence numbers from both cameras, you can combine them into one video with your own editing software.
