Description

As featured in a newly-released special episode of the brand's "You Can Be Anything" web video series, the two diverse Barbie dolls have been filmed floating inside the space station's multi-windowed Cupola backdropped by Earth below. The digital media are being used for a Barbie YouTube series to promote science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. By the mid-1980s, the idea of a woman in space (plastic or human) was nothing new, but this was the first time that a Black Barbie doll became an astronaut.

While the first woman went to space in 1963, NASA did not allow women to join their astronaut corps until 1978, and as such, Barbie started her astronaut career at a time when it was generally not possible for women to do so. The latter causes the liquid nitrogen to convert to gas, propelling some Moon dust into the surrounding air. The out-of-this-world set makes a great gift for kids 3 to 7 years old, especially those who love space, science and shooting for the stars! Her work has earned numerous state awards, including the Virginia Press Association's top honor, Best in Show, and national recognition for narrative storytelling. Clad in a white spacesuit with shimmery pink detailing, this doll perfectly blends the more realistic, practical styles of the 1960s and ‘90s with the hyperfeminine fashions of the 1980s.

After all, the intention behind Barbie was that she would allow girls to imagine themselves as young adults. To celebrate Barbie's 60th anniversary, we worked alongside Mattel Canada to send Astronaut Barbie into space for real. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. These 4 or 5-star reviews represent the opinions of the individuals who posted them and do not reflect the views of Etsy. Among these highlighted women are Katherine Johnson, a NASA mathematician who worked on the Mercury program; Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; and Samantha Cristoforetti, the first Italian woman in space. While separate from Mission DreamStar, we look forward to Samantha's flight and continuing to celebrate STEM," McKnight told collectSPACE.

Based on popular Space Camp programs for children and teenagers, this doll was the first space-themed Barbie that wasn’t an astronaut. The trailer shows Barbie atop a rocket with Ken trailing behind, both clad in suits almost identical to the 1965 Miss Astronaut outfit, complete with brown zip-up boots and the recognisable buckle fastened across the chest.Barbie was not the first female astronaut - that was Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963. In Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film, she appears as a US president, a Nobel Prize winning physicist, a Supreme Court Justice and even a mermaid.
